Default Good books

Hey all,
I'm looking for a new book (or series of) to get into. I'm quite a fan of the LOTR seris, the Hobbit and Deltora quest when I was younger. Suggestions? Even if they aren't that close to the aforementioned publications.

If you like adolescent heros I recommend:
The Bartimaeus Trilogy
His Dark Materials
Artemis Fowl
The Neverending Story
parts of The Chronicles of Narnia
and last but not least Harry Potter

I'm going to recommend The Diamond Age by Neil Stephenson because it's awesome. Greg Egan and Iain M. Banks are also great writers. And of course Dan Simmons' Hyperion Cantos.

If you prefer fantasy, I'd recommend Robin Hobb's books and maybe the Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman. A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin is a good read, but the author is never going to finish it before dying, the lazy bum.

On of my favorite books:

Grendel - By John Gardner

It's a fairly short book (I think under 200 pages)...but it's an amazing retelling of the original Beowulf story...this time from the perspective of the monster Grendel. The writing is absolutely superb and wonderfully descriptive. As you read you get sucked into Grendel's world and even though he is doing really awful acts of violence, you almost sympathize with the monster and his unending personal agony and nihilism.

I highly recommend the book if you had not read it before...it's a fantasy story but I think it's pretty profound in the way it is written.

I would recommend the Diablo The Sin War Trilogy, absolutely fun to read, twists and turns at every corner.

The Magic of Recluse is a series by L.E. Modessitt, very intricate story line and very well thought out. If you want something more aggressive, I've never seen anyone tell the story of a large battle the way Raymond E. Fiest does Magician series, Riftwar saga, Riftwar Legacy, Serpentwar saga. Mr. and Mrs. Eddings are an old favorite as well, I can practically _recite_ The Elenium trilogy from cover to cover. Another bizarre trilogy who's author esapes me at the moment was released together under the name of 'The Unbeheaded King'. The list goes on, but I gotta stop to breathe.

I concur. I love the The Sin Wars series I found the Sin War Trilogy uber cheap on some bookstore and devoured it.

This and the other books people have mentioned are AMAZING choices.

If you're into the young adult, fantasy adventure types as mentioned above I recommend: Keys to the Kingdom by Garth Nix. But you're teetering too old for such novels at 20, lol. I'm 18 and I still enjoy them, albeit most of them don't require that much intelligence.

I also recommend anything by Harry Turtledove, an amazing author. He's big on alternate history. I'm reading The Atlantis Series right now, just got the new book recently, Liberating Atlantis.

I also found a book by him Between the River in a used bookstore.

Lastly, I recommend the Youth In Revolt, an epistolary novel (novel written as a series/containing multiple books). Its written by CD Payne, and is dark humor. There are also three sequels, which were equally amazing [The first, Revolting Youth: The Further Journals of Nick Twisp, The Second, Young and Revolting: The Continental Journeys of Nick Twisp. The third, Revoltingly Young: The Journals of Nick Twisp's Younger Brother]

Youth in Revolt was recently remade into a movie, starring Michael Cera as Nick Twist and Portia Doubleday as Sheeni Saunders.

Happy reading.
