Except i didnt write a novel on the fact, nor did I detail info that we know already, like W goes forward.

I think part of the debate right now is that click to move makes the game easy and coddled, and wasd makes it "hardcore". Not a view I share in the slightest (both control schemes make for different game types alltogether and has nothing to do with difficulty), but it seems to be what's fueling the discussion.

If that's the case I don't agree in the slightest either. I've played easy WASD games, and I've played hard mouse driven games.

A friend of mine and I used to stay up all night playing Champions of Norrath and it's sequel, Return to Arms. It's only available on the PS2, but we enjoyed it nonetheless.
Since then however, he's refused to play any game without WASD movement, which saddens me greatly. Personally, I'm fine either way, though WASD movement just seems to give my left hand a bit more to do. |

Heh. Since the time of this post/since I last looked at this thread, I tried Spiral Knights when it was added to Steam. It can be played either way. If you do choose to use WASD for movement, though, holy crap is it ridiculously easy. Being able to move while shooting in a game that attempts to be balanced to be playable with only the mouse basically means you can kite like nobody's business and completely eliminates any use for melee attacks or shields. With a little patience, you can run through entire floors without even coming close to taking a single hit. It does reduce your movement speed by about half while shooting, but firing in bursts solves that pretty well once you learn the enemy attack patterns. My short time playing that did a lot to convince me of how hard/impossible it would be to balance a game to be playable with both control options instead of just one or the other.

To me, it doesn't sound like WASD movement will work for example on boxhead you can't face in every direction, therefore you cannot shoot in the specific direction you want to shoot in. same goes for GD or TQ you won't be able to get them with your bow from long range

Ok, maybe I should've been a little more specific: "and also not feel awkward in at least one of the two modes". Giving the movement and combat controls separate inputs but limiting their use so they're non-simultaneous often feels restrictive to me, like they might as well not have bothered.

I would assume that if GD or an ARPG had WASD movement it would control similar to Alien Swarm or Dead Nation.
I do like that control style, but it would certainly cause imbalances. I feel like that style may be nice for a new, different ARPG, but not Grim Dawn. Grim Dawn can still improve on controls over TQ though. I for one think that spellcasting controls as well as ranged combat controls can be smoothed out and feel somewhat less clunky - especially at lower attack/cast speeds. |

my preference (being left handed) is using the arrow keys for movement, so that I can control the mouse with my left hand, too awkward otherwise especially having to use the WASD keys. Always remap the movement keys to the arrow keys in games wherever possible.
