I'm not entirely certain but I believe Steam players and GOG players cannot play together. Between the 2, I also want to say that Steam has the bigger player base.

Differences are Gog is drm free but less playerbase if you want MP, updates can be slower as Gog manually check each update before releasing and depending on whether you use Gog galaxy or not updates can result in a re-download of the entire game.

That is purely personal choice, unless MP is very important then wait for steam.

With GoG you can play the game even if your internet connection is down. Not so on Steam thanks to DRM. Also I love this game but I have to say that the multiplayer experience is pretty bad. I used to play with my brother when I first got it and we had lots of problems, from not being able to even see the game the other had created to all sorts of sych problems in game (loot, character position, etc.) When I began playing again recently I started out right next to my brother, in his house, and encountered much the same situation. We were seeing different things on our screens and did have trouble finding the game the other had created. Unless you are really set on playing with others and are willing to work around these problems I would recommend getting it on GoG.

You can play Grim Dawn on Steam in offline mode whenever you wish and always could.

I played GoG until AoM and I can tell you that you will rarely find players in MP.

Steam is the place for MP
