The second part of your statement is pretty wrong, the problem was not melee classes being gimped in D3, the problem was they were too gear dependent. As soon as they started racking up gear, the melee classes quickly did tonnes and tonnes of damage as well as having high survivability. If anything, melee classes are overpowered in D3 compared to casters (maybe not the monk, but the barbarian certainly was/is).
That's only been after blizz took out the nerf bat and pummeled both the wizard and demon hunter to a bloody pulp.

And well deserved too, although DH are fine now tbh, I dont know much about Wizards. I play Barb and DH myself
