to be exact this is how VERY BREIFLY the mayan calendar works.

This will be the format :
Unit : xx
# of days : xx
Long count period : xx
# of solar years : xx

Unit : 1 K'In
# of days : 1
Long count period : --
# of solar years : --

Unit : 1 Winal
# of days : 20
Long count period : 20x K'in
# of solar years : --à

Unit : 1 Tun
# of days : 360
Long count period : 18x Winal
# of solar years : 1

Unit : 1 K'atun
# of days : 7200
Long count period : 20x Tun
# of solar years : 20

Unit : 1 B'ak'tun
# of days : 144 000
Long count period : 20x K'atun
# of solar years : 20

Unit : 1 Piktun
# of days : 2 880 000
Long count period : 20x B'ak'tun
# of solar years : 7885

Unit : 1 Kalabtun
# of days : 57 600 000
Long count period : 20x Piktun
# of solar years : 157 704

Unit : 1 K'inchitun
# of days : 1 152 000 000
Long count period : 20x Kalabtun
# of solar years : 3 154 071

Unit : 1 Alatun
# of days : 23 040 000 000
Long count period : 20x K'inchitun
# of solar years : 63 081 429

So that being said their date format is the following :
0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0

And from the point they started to count, (August 11, 3114 BCE in the greorrian calendar) December 21st 2012 is simply the day which their calendar will turn to the next B'ak'tun.. meaning 13.0.0.0.0

You can go beyond that.. saying that the end of the world will be October 13 4772, the day which the earth will reach it's first piktun... 1.0.0.0.0.0

That's for the long count.. they even have a 260 days calendar.. which is called the Tzolkin

I want to know who started this end of the world thing from that calendar and give him a piece of something maybe exploding cake. I don't believe in this whole thing but I am afraid of the people who do and will go crazy on that day.

The worst thing that could possibly happen has already been set in motion.

Grim Dawn Alpha will not arrive before the end of the year!

Like hooby was saying , I did a little research for a book idea - ("Gods" essentially very powerful astral deities return from their prison, inhabiting vassals in a kind of deitific M-Day)

The Mayans didn't believe in doomsday. That simple, the idea was foreign to their culture and religion, Doomsday and the end of the world is apparently a very Judeo-Christian idea (who most probably stole it from the Nords or some of the other central European religions)

Why they set the calendar to that date? Who knows, maybe they were having a bad day and thought oh screw it, that's a couple of thousand years, somebody else can deal with the mess!

Knowing that the world is very unlikely to end, the scaremongering has now been reduced to some level of rioting/civil disturbance but there is absolutely no rationale behind this. How many people are actually going to be disappointed that the world has not ended to the extent that they start a riot? The whole thing is absurd - as we draw closer to the fateful day, the portents of doom will be continually downgraded to the point where the non-appearance of the Grim Dawn alpha may well be the only remaining signifier of the heralded disaster.
