Arrow Tips and Best Practices for using the Forums

Activity on the forums is on the rise … anticipation is in the air!

Let us start by saying thanks to all the forum participants. Your behavior has been stellar and the "moderator" tasks have been minimal. We just want to point out a few things.
  • Be sure to read Crate's Forum Guidelines and Forum Etiquette
  • Please use the "Report" function of the forum to help us moderators find problems as soon as they arise.
And we compiled some general posting tips for you.
Thanks, and keep up the great atmosphere you have brought to this site.

Default We want to hear what you have to say

Your question might already be answered – a lot of information is available in the Game Guide and the Game Info and Features forum. Dig deep and post new questions on a better informed level.

If you have multiple questions/feedback, use/start separate threads for each topic. Ideas in small doses are more digestible than one wall of text. Refrain from starting post-your-question, my-wishlist, chat (use our IRC channel for this) or any other all-purpose threads.

Discussions often spawn spin-offs – not the occasional joke or personal remark, which just adds to the flair of our community. We mods might decide to move any longer off-topic discussion into another/new thread. If you are about to start it, then consider to look for a better suited thread or start a new one. Give us a hint, if it has already happened.

Default Use good style

Please make use of the formatting options of the editor (see the BB code tags for all options). Used in moderation this will make your posts more readable.
  • Highlighting key statements, names and the like is great. Avoid to highlight larger portions of text or even the whole post – this defies its purpose.
  • Also use punctuation, paragraphs (i.e. insert a space line) and correct spelling.
  • There might be a valid reason for you to use a larger font size, but in general: keep the noise down and stick to the default size. Size 1 is recommended for your signature.
  • Stick to the default font. Especially serif fonts are eye-straining when used at small sizes.
  • Embed pictures if they (almost) fit the forum layout – otherwise just link them.

Default Choose a good title

Give your thread a worthy title – one which makes people want to read more. The title you have chosen firstly might not be very helpful. Read your post again to come up with a better one. Be specific – reconsider if you used words like question, information, suggestion, help which are all very meaningless.

These are some exemplary thread titles to give you an idea:
You cannot change the title of any existing thread - PM us, so that we can update your thread title.

Your replies can have titles, too.

Default About thread necro and creating duplicate threads

You found the perfect thread for your query, but it is so old ... We are not concerned about thread necroing - especially for ageless topics. So, if your query is really on topic, then continue that very thread.

However, long threads have most likely become off topic and if the feedback provided is ages old, it might be outdated. In such a case you are probably better off with a reboot of the topic in a new, fresh thread. Show that you did your homework by adding quotes from the older threads and take it up from there.

Eventually we might move your thread into an existing one, but don't let that bother you … you've come so far.

Default Dealing with spam and offending posts

The "Report" function of the forum can be used for reporting spam and ads (if you replied instead, we also had to remove your post) and for trolling and problematic (harassment, fighting or rude) posts.

Default "Now I'm afraid to break the rules."

The above shall give you directions to make everybody's life easier. First of all you are welcome here, and this place is meant to help you. If in doubt, do what you came for in the first place.

Should you decide to return more often, then you will quickly find out what works best.
