Default Belgium MoJ declares Loot Crates to be labeled as gambling

https://nieuws.vtm.be/vtm-nieuws/bin...ames-verbieden

"Mixing gambling and gaming, especially at a young age, is dangerous for the mental health of the child."

This is all from the uproar over Battlefront 2's microtransactions. Considering the Belgian Ministry of Justice declared loot crates/lootboxes to be forms of online gambling, this could potentially open the floodgates for other countries to file similar declarations which could effectively eliminate loot crates entirely.

Mind you, they are very specific about what they are considering to fall under the gambling category. Microtransactions that label exactly what you're paying for (skins, character unlocks, etc.) are perfectly fine but anything that is paid for with real money for a randomized prize is gambling. The Ministry of Justice are seeking to immediately remove all randomized loot crates/lootboxes and any developer/publisher that does not adhere to the new standards will have their games banned in all countries that fall under the BMoJ's jurisdiction. EA has a set number of days to release a patch for all EU (still speculated) copies of Battlefront 2 that removes the loot crates from the online store. If they don't comply, they face very hefty fines.

I'm generally skeptical of anything any government does, but I'll make an exception in this case.

Hawaii has public stated that they consider lootboxes as a predatory practice and are looking into passing a legislation to forbid the selling of games with lootboxes to underage people.

Australia is now also looking into lootboxes, same with Netherlands. More and more countries are looking into these pieces of unadulterated trash and hopefully these things just disappear for good.

Great decision, but will it affect any other EU countries except Belgium? As far as I know for this sort of thing it's each country's decision and doesn't affect the rest of the EU.

Still, it's certainly a step in the right direction. Let's hope other countries follow Belgium's lead.

I generally view government interference as poisonous in a number of circumstances but sometimes you need chemo to kill cancer.
