Default Duplicate Character has Appeared In Selection List

Hi, this is a bit frustrating as I am not sure what I've done/has happened but two of my characters appear to be listed twice in the character selection screen. They have identical names, equipment and stats. If I play with one, the other doesn't share any progress made, so they are identical but separate. The most worrying thing is that if I delete one of them, then choose the other to play, he starts totally fresh - level 1, at the very first quest with no items or anything.

I have Steam Cloud saving turned on. How can I fix this?

Do you have Steam cloud saving enabled in both Steam and Grim Dawn

No guarantee, but I'd look in both save locations as shown below and if you have the same char in both locations, I'd back them both up and then one of the following...after exiting steam totally first.
  • Delete the char save folder from Documents/my games.
  • Delete both saves from each location and place the larger backed up save back in the steam save location.
  • Delete both saves from each location and place each backed up save back in the steam save location one by one.
  • Disable Steam cloud saving completely and place each backed up save back in the Local save location one by one.
  • Verify game files via steam
  • Turn everything off and back on....
  • Set fire to the pc it's obviously possessed....

Char save locations.
These are the default install locations, if you have installed steam elsewhere then please navigate to the steam folder there.
Steam
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\folder of numbers\219990\remote\save

Grim Dawn
C:\Users\username\Documents\my games\Grim Dawn\save
Hope something might help

Just to re-emphasise Back up, Back up the Back up and then Back up yet again any existing chars before starting anything.

So I moved all my characters out from all accounts, deleted the cloud saves, and then put in the latest characters. When I quit Grim Dawn it synced and all was well in the world again.

without cloud save it probably cannot happen, but there are other things that can go wrong, so backing up is always a good idea.

For what it is worth, I use local saves and have 0 problems with the Steam version. The GOG version seems to be a little more likely to crash for me (same PC...)

Yeah its worth saying I used to use local saves too, but the wife and I have picked up a Steam Link and now we play coop downstairs on the TV quite a bit. So it really helps having saves in the cloud since when you move about they follow you. That being said I'm slightly untrusting of it and keep check my characters to make sure they are still intact haha.
