I tend to be a bit reserved when it comes to the idea of auto-picking up items but potions are something that you ALWAYS want. Is this going too far or would it be a welcome relief from excess clicking?
The only problem I can foresee is if it gets to be where potions are filling up your inventory and you go to pick up a piece of loot and you can't because your inventory's full of potions.

So maybe like if you have a separate area for only storing potions built in or something then I'd go for this!

Potions stack. Alot, like 50-99, somewhere around there medierra confirmed we'd be able to stack that many, not to mention they are much rarer than in other RPGs.

They're also rather expensive, so if you ever have much more than you need, selling them would be a good way to make money.

In my opinion, characters shouldn't rely on potions for healing, but skills and game mechanics.

Just make sure to have some healing mechanisms in lengthy boss fights, or at least the possibility to retreat (while completely healing most non main quest bosses).
An expensive (but cheaper than death) mark and recall death ward contingency would be interesting, so instead of killing you, a death blow would teleport you to safety (boss healed again of course).

I also hope gold will be scarce, with good things in shops (maybe an item of the day like borderlands, resets every X minutes, a small chance of finding a high quality item in stock).

Getting of topic...

Wondering if this is a realistic scenario. Is it so hard to make money, that you would resort to sell your potions?

duno if gold-(salt) will be hard to come by?
evry game will have a gold cheat 2 weeks after release anyway, så if you tking gold will be hard to get, cheat!, the rest of us take the challange up and fight our way to beat the game, wilt alot potions or not, with alot gold or not dosent matter!
potions vill be last resort as i understand so auto pick up will be nice when them rare potions drop!
auto gold pickup is also nice!

anyway, looking forward to play GD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

Would be good. A potion that magically heals you should be expensive, imho. It'd easily be worth a billion dollars in our world

And well, I'm guessing I'll probably won't carry around more than 20 or so. So finding potions gives you that "awesome, I found something useful!" as well.

Although I do wonder; with the steep inflation that this genre tends to hold on to, wouldn't potions become either worthless lategame, or too expensive earlygame?

Actually, I would enjoy it if money was rare. Too often you're left floating with millions of cash, able to buy anything you want from the shops. It'd be great if the shops actually held on to better items overall, but they were so expensive you could only purchase one item every once in a while.

Good weapons and armor was expensive, and how much money do you think an adventurer would have coming in since they aren't working. I can't imagine zombies or cultists would drop much.

The problem with currency in these games has never been the amount of currency dropped by monsters. It's the hyperinflation of items that causes this so called hyperinflation. If newer and better items are insanely expensive (because they are also much more useful than their lower difficulty counterparts), even selling them for 10% of their original value with a cap gives the player too much money.
