http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...he-banner-saga
Another kickstarter project in addition to Wasteland 2, which I have also backed, and of course the Double Fine Adventure that I backed. If you have any interest in 2D art/animation, turn based tactical combat (supposedly similar to Final Fantasy Tactics), and a malleable story, then you may want to consider becoming a backer too. I am a backer and since the second update gave me the option to vote in the poll, I selected PC with Linux as a secondary platform option and NO other choices. I am hoping they avoid spending any time/effort/funds on a tablet/console port of any kind. I don't personally enjoy playing games on a touch screen. |

New Update is out from the developers. They have obtained top notch music, sound, and animation studios. A pledge of $50 will net all three parts of the trilogy, or all three chapters, as I believe they are calling it. Each chapter is a standalone game.
My understanding based on their posts and various comments/interviews I've read, is that the game will be similar to King of Dragon Pass, or even Oregon Trail at times, with turn based tactical battles occurring as necessitated by the current events. Oregon Trail probably sounds like an odd game to compare to, but in essence, the Banner Saga will be about a journey of a group of people who must make decisions about their supplies, their lives, and their interpersonal relationships. It won't be about killing an archvillain or saving the world. It should offer quite a bit of replayability. I've not played King of Dragon Pass, except for the demo/tour, but it seemed similar as well. |

Maybe I have the wrong idea about the game...while I am interested in the concept (2D turn based tactical RPG? Yes please!), the execution looked pretty poor. Not really the art style, but the way the video's portrayed the combat...looked like a flash game to be honest. The effects...animations...just looked cheap.

Hmm, the amount of combat footage shown so far has been very sparse. The few seconds shown seemed to be slowed down for the purposes of the video as well. Also, keep in mind that they are bringing an animation studio onboard to help now.
Combat isn't the main focus though. All signs I've seen point to the main gameplay revolving around travelling along and making decisions. If two clans in your party are feuding, which do you choose to keep and why? Perhaps one has owns a lot of the carts you are using to store food and supplies while the other contains some of your stronger warriors. Do you want to risk losing storage space for the sake of defense? A storm is approaching... do you make camp and wait it out or press on? You may wait and later determine a tribe you could have saved and added to your camp had recently died. Your loss. You may instead push on and find those same tribespeople still alive but undert attack. You choose to defend them and go into combat with their attackers. You may later learn those attackers have powerful allies that have learned of your involvement and have now vowed revenge. These are my rough examples, but I believe they will be similar to their game based on their comments and references to King of Dragon Pass. One of them also did an AAR of Oregon Trail. Combat will certainly come into play, and they have stated that the surrounding environment will be a part of the tactical map as well. Animations are kind of secondary to atmosphere and storytelling in this type of setting. |

Ah ok...that would make sense then, appreciate you explaining the game a bit more. Not sure if that really interests me but I'll definitely keep an eye out of the game.
