I'm thinking about picking this up off steam. $20 and I hear the 1.74 patch makes it quite a solid game. Any thoughts, suggestions?

I picked up Gothic 2 Gold, and Gothic 3 from Steam during the sale for $1.99, haven't gotten around to Gothic 3 Yet but I can tell you that Gothic 2 has some seriously issues with nVidia graphics cards and Win Vista/7.

I hear Gothic 3 runs fine however.

I played Gothic 3 with only the official patch, and while it did still have some bugs and flaws, I thought it was a VERY good RPG. I hear the new community patch makes it even better and even improves combat mechanics. I recommend the game, just give it time to grow on you.

you can get the patch from here, jsut scroll down

the game is hardcore only, so save OFTEN
when you die you don't resurrect, you just have to exit hthe game and start over at your last save

the game can be extremely frustrating at times:
1) like the time I took along a merc friend and it turned out he was a wanted criminal and all the guards charged us both started attacking. We both died in no time.
2) knocking a guard down only stuns him for a few seconds. He'll lie there motionless while you start fighting a different guard, then he'll get up and start attacking you again. You have to do a couple of special combo clicks to kill him and it usually takes to long when I'm surrounded.
3) you can't pick an item up while you're holding a weapon, so you have to sheath your sword or bow to harvest plants, loot fallen enemies or butcher animals.

combat is not so fun. If you liked Oblivion first person combat you might enjoy this. I didn't.

I have a EVGA GeForce 880GS which certainly isn't anywhere near top of the line now a days, but it isn't garbage either and the game stutters like crazy. I have Vista 64, but still.

Anyway, the idea of the game seems fun. Trying to stay neutral while completing all the quests can be tough but still fun. You wnat to be neutral or else you'll be attacked by the opposing guards on site. There are interesting "champions" scattered about.

But I couldn't play more than a few hours. Just didn't like the combat.

I preferred Gothic above Oblivion, but it's pretty rough around the edges (perhaps sort of what makes it fun). The bugs though, such as wolves (and others) stunlocking you, weird damage bursts, no feeling of getting more powerful (which was clearly there in Gothic 1 and 2).

I'm not sure how much the community patch fixed, but heard a lot of good stories about it. Perhaps I'll try it again, someday... dunno though. I think it was the lesser part of the series, despite the aging of the other 2.

hmm..sounds like my money could be better spent. I'm just looking for something to get me back into rpg's. I sorta like playing TQ but haven't been able to bring myself to click on the icon yet.

What kind of RPG's interest you...or rather what do you like about them? Strong narrative? Deep leveling? Loot? Interesting NPC interactions? Combat?

All of the above? I'm just interested in a game that is good...I know it seems vague haha. If I had to choose it'd mostly be character development, combat and loot. A good storyline helps but isn't necessary
