View Full Version : Melee Magic Class?

Just something I'd like personally is a class that focuses on short range solo combat, but does it through magic rather than brute strength. See I quite prefer playing melee to ranged in ARPGs but I always find the magic classes much more interesting with their spells, auras and whatnot. So how many of you wouldn't mind seeing a melee class that has a skillset of magic skills at some point? Just an idea. :)

You mean like Barbarian in diablo 3 where he can smash monster and use shockwave and doing huge stomp on the ground?

AXidenT - I think you can consider your wish granted:
In GD I'm moving away from the typical feeble staff / wand wielding caster image and towards a more badass image as a specialist soldier type. To that end, casters will wield either melee weapons or guns but there will be a left-hand item called a fulcrum that will function as a sort of supporting piece of gear similar to a shield for warrior, but probably more oriented towards boosting offensive power and energy.
Searching for this I also found:
No, the concept below is from Black Legion but I'm talking about something similar to this:

I'm not afraid of players ignoring melee weapons or guns, I just see staffs and wands as being sort of redundant, not fitting that well with the fiction, and really kind of taking away from what a real spell caster should be - a class that relies primarily on spells instead of a weapon. I mean a staff in TQ is basically a bow with different art and animations. So since we already have a ranged weapon class, I think it is a lot more interesting to have the pure archetypal caster classes using spells instead of an alternative ranged weapon.

Confuted, if I understand you correctly, it sounds like your main concern is that caster oriented classes should have at least one attack skill with no cool-down that can always be used. This is right in line with my vision for caster classes in GD since my hope is to not have pure-casters be reliant upon weapons as a means of attack like some were in TQ

One of my favourite rpg classes of all time was the Dervish from Guild Wars, which could be played like a mage tank, believe it or not.
His innate stats were quite low and his armor stats was in the cloth realm, but he tanked using really short duration buffs and debuffs that would often have one effect for it's duration as well for when it ended.

I liked it because it went against the biggest reason tanks are often dull to play. Instead of your job being completely passive, you were frantically juggling your buffs and debuffs and how they synergized.

Sounds like a good basic formula for any hero/mastery/dual-class. In single player you need to tank anyway. And the game should encourage/force you use many of your skills frequently.

So the standard caster class is looking like it can play melee? I am very happy if that is the case. :D

To an extent, but with less of a focus on healing.

Erm, I was thinking TQ Paladin. (Storm/Defense) That was a fun class to play, devastating spells and one stalwart defense.

Ah. To me those sorts of classes were still more hybrids than what I'm talking about. :)
