View Full Version : Armor Dyes

So yeah, you know how you can dye your tunic in TQ?

Would adding dye to your armor be something anyone is interested in? Eg, general shops sell all sorts of dyes, randomized, but of course, black is ever elusive, just like in TQ. So you go to this shop, buy a red dye, and decide to dye your shoulder plates red.

Cool? I dunno. This was something I thought was cool about Guild Wars and HGL(although you couldn't really choose your own afaik), but I understand it's a pretty annoying thing to get working because of not only the programming involved (which I'm not sure would be so difficult, considering there's already a dye system for the character), but the amount of alternate skins for every piece of armor. I for one, have always wanted to dye certain armors in TQ to get a matching set of different armors. Using a Robes of Sidoros Logos and a Tracker's Hood has got me wanting to dye my hood red or dye my armor green to get them to match better.

I don't see why not, not something I've really cared too much about (more of a function over form kinda guy) but there is a lot of people who do like this kind of stuff. There's really no negative here other than the amount of time it takes to program it into the game.

Lol you'd think so right? MadWasp didn't like my skill color request though, so you never know. :)

Your tunic was never showing anyway... at least after the first 15minutes of the game

Parts of your tunic do show in TQ with a lot of armors, and to a picky eye (mine :o) it can really be distracting to wear blackish armor with a touch of green sticking out here and there. I know you don't see it from afar, but if such things don't matter, why pay ANY attention to armor details? Why not just make them like Lego blocks.

I'd like color dyes, as vain as they are...

No, it really does show sometimes, but that's not the point of this. It's for dyes on your actual armor.

I respectfully disagree.

1) It would be hard and time consuming to implement.
An armour can't just be 1 colour through it, like an all red armor or an all blue, it would need shades of the same colour at least, and I doubt that can be done to look in an aesthetically pleasing manner randomly. Therefore, developers need to make colour changes to every armours manually for every armour coluor available. Unless theres something which would make dying armour a fast process.

2) It would not be straight-forward to identify a piece of armour form lets say an in-game picture.

Honestly, I'd rather see the dev's create 10 more armour pieces than do this.

So, in short, you think color dyes are just manure? ;)

Couldn't resist, sorry.

Cool request - but each piece of armour usually consists of multiple parts. You might just want to dye 1 or 2 parts, but not turn it into a boring single-coloured item. So, each part would require separate handling, which might be tricky to implement. :undecided:

However, should this make its way into GD, then I'd like to have some magic soap to reset my ugly armour to its original beauty. ;)

Dye to me has been more for fun and mp games. Make oneself stand out as to your own taste. I do like the idea of the magic soap too!! :)

Er, who said anything about making it all one color? I sure as hell didn't, that would be retarded.

The only hard part to implement imo would be the code for the dyes. I've reskinned all sorts of armor in TQ, and it's actually very simple, just takes a quick process of altering hues and saturations and replacing colors with scripts. Less than a ten minute process really, and if you make a script that makes say, 5 colors of each skin and saves them as separate files, easy work.

Disagree as you may, it's really not that long of a process to reskin each armor piece for several different colors.

2) It would not be straight-forward to identify a piece of armour form lets say an in-game picture.

Pff, who cares?
If someone mixes a bunch of items from different sets, or MIs even and it comes out to be really bad ass JUST because they dyed it, I say that's freaking awesome. If they can't identify the armor by the model, that's their own damn fault. I could come up with like 20 example pictures using TQ armors showing how easy it is to manipulate the textures and how fast it could be, and that it's NOT difficult to identify the armor, but I'm really not in the mood to do all this work to please a naysayer.

Honestly, I'd rather see the dev's create 10 more armour pieces than do this.

Sure, so would I, but using this concept of armor dyes, you can have potentially infinite armor sets. Lots of people wear gear because of the looks, not entirely because of the stats. I go for stats most of the time, but if I can dye my armor to make it look more like another or to make it look even more bad ass, why the hell not?

I mean, what's the point of them creating 10 more pieces if they all suck? Example: In titan quest there were two really bad ass looking sets, The abyssal set and the tartarus set. Probably THE coolest looking sets in the game, however... no one used them because they were total trash.

True. But like I said, I wasn't intending the armor dyes to freaking change the armor into a horrible monotonous wall of pink or something.

Oo, can I have a choice of colours to cycle to as well as bloom and particle effects?

haha this is starting to sound like 'Grim Dawn: Sims Edition'

probably would be fun but might be effort to stick all the colours and textures in there, I can only imagine the horrific colour combinations.. mmm lime green and luminous pink :D

I lied! I took the time to do the colors. :/ And it barely took me twenty minutes, and that's without a script.

Don't tempt the man ;) I'm still convinced dyes for armor would be a welcome addition to customization.

I'll draw the line in changing the color and size of your pimples. I wonder what will be the first game to allow that, ME3?

I like the idea but it might be too much for Crate to do with the time/money they have.

In NWN1 the armour had 6 properties that could be coloured, 2 metal, 2 leather and 2 cloth and you could end up with some really strange colour combos using the available in game dyes and the standard armours :)

Though NWN1 is showing its age now as the armour models aren't anything to rave about. I still like replaying HotU from time to time.

Time, maybe. Although it doesn't take very long for each, like I've already said. But I'd be happy to get this even in a DLC pack or something, which Crate seems confident that there will be plenty of.

If Crate doesn't have the time to implement this on release, this would be a great idea for a DLC. I'd be happy to pay a couple of dollars just for this, and later they could bundle it with expansions. Anyways, I'm all for this!

I do not think it should be optional. You should have a color table and each piece randomly drops with a color. When you start a new toon, the game can ask you 3 questions. One of those questions should be "What is you favorite color?". Then the drop rate for that color could be the rarest and you could farm, farm, farm...

btw- nice image asylum, hopefully you motivate Rhis to leave a modding backdoor for such things at least.

As do I, I mean even if Crate doesn't make the multiple colors due to money or time constraints, I hope they at least allow for armor dyes so modders can implement them on their own time.

I think this is a decision that should be made in the early beginning before the art team does a shit load of work.

Technically your texture would be split up in the "non-recolor layer" and X (often grayscale) "recolor layers". Now you'd use a secondary texture to mask these layers and their opacity through the RGBA channels, i.e. RED would become the PRIMARY color, BLUE the SECONDARY/TRIM color etc.
Lastly you could employ a shader or preprocess the texture to either overlay or blend in the masked bits using your custom color(s) that you pick ingame... at least that's how other games I've encountered did it. Saves you the trouble of doing 19934945 different skins plus should look quite alright if done properly.

Has there been any news on this? I'd love to have a color picker option, be it pregenerated or not! :D

Also, sorry to necro a year old thread.. :-P

To be honest, this sentence can be used for each post, each idea in this forum. The people who use it here will surely use it for the ideas they like more, of course...

This is the suggestions forum then let's suggest, the devs know where they are going (I hope :p).

That's very true, however, by saying this they share their opinion (which is important for the devs as well, to see how popular something is), that they like the idea, but prefer to see other stuff over it. That has value and gives insight in the communities' wishes, imho.

It would be nice if crafting would provide a way to change the look of an item without changing the stats, so you can modify your various armor parts to match each other better, or, in general, to make your character look more to your liking.

Guess this wouldn't make sense for unique items (blue/purple), since they are supposed to be unique also in terms of visuals, but for yellows and greens it would be very nice.

What do you think? Do you care about what your toons look like, or are the stats all that matters for you?
