This is my first suggestion. This is really what I think of when I play a game.

A Game-play mechanic is how the player interacts with the game.

A fun game is a game that takes advantage of mechanics in interesting ways that allow the gamer to easily play and understand the game.

A game that has many different kinds of mechanics tends to be very interesting .

Confusing mechanics should not be in a game that is meant to be fun, they inhibit the game's over-all fun feel and make it too complicated for the player to understand (I.E. not fun).

If the developers of a game are set out to making a fun game that many people could play and understand (the Grandma - effect I.E. my Grandma could play this game) they should also attempt to include depth into that game for those of us who want a different challenge, without creating unnecessary complicated mechanics.

Alright, I'm going to suggest mechanics to this game, and the reason for these mechanics is to allow the developers to pick and choose the ones they know they could implement, but I will be arguing for some of these mechanics.

I will make individual posts on game mechanics that I will suggest, but please don't be surprised when you see mechanics from Diablo 3 pop up, because I already see why they are useful and interesting mechanics, having played the game myself.

That being said, this game will be individual;and that any of our suggestions might not get used. Of course, who am I to say, really.

What do you mean by this game will be individual?

Are you saying that this game will be, in and of itself, it's own unique game?

While I agree, that is true, there is nothing wrong with taking ideas that work from other currently developing games.

However, I'm sure there are mechanics that Diablo 3 will not have that could be implemented also and still be fun and enjoyable.

Obviously every suggestion can not be implemented, however, this is a good way to start a reasoned dialogue about what works and what doesn't work, what is fun, and what isn't fun.

I think it is always good for the developer to ask himself "What if I couldn't do this?" That alone forces him to think of new ways to play the game.
