View Full Version : Item Seed

Item seed (afaik) is a random number (a chance, if you will) that determines some of item's properties. Now, I know that it's difficult to design many item models, but all the monotony that revolves around items is usually game-breaking to me and I believe that big part of your loyal community would agree with me on this:

Lets imagine this item;

"Hand Axe"
dmg 10~13

now, there are three seeds for this item:
1 - normal stats
2 - +10% attack speed
3 - +5 dmg.

the final stats of this item would be determined by a random number from 1 to 3, and that is absolutely good.

What I am suggesting here is that, along with stat difference, there is a visual difference in the item with seed 1 and 3.

for example, item with seed 3 could have visually bigger blade, or sharper (shinier), while item with seed 2 could have better grip on the handle or thinner blade, or whatever comes to your mind.

I hope you can see trough this random example, and I hope I'll see it happen.

Cheers and Good Luck.

Well, more variation is great, and if Crate said they wanted to do that I would be thrilled. But personally that kind of slight variation on that granular level would be very difficult to do and require a lot more modeling work.

And personally I don't feel this is game breaking at all...I think Titan Quest had a tremendous amount of item variation without this kind of granular detail.

Hmmm... I know that the chances are slim for this (because, the camera is going to rotate this time, they will need to pay lots of attention at editor for possible "glitch views") but those of us who played lots of TQ are rather bored with the same old loot over and over and over again. It went to that extent, that some green and blue items (rings especially) had the same models (icons) as regular yellow or gray ones.

I do get your point man, and I think it is a very good idea. It's just a tremendous amount of work :p

But yeah, if yellow and below items each had maybe 3-4 interchangeable "parts" that were based on item modifications that would be really cool. They wouldn't be major changes like you said, though. Like if the mod was +15% damage maybe the axe head would look sharper or something like that. Small changes but this would certainly give each item a little something else special.

well this can be easily improved in the way borderlands did it.

don't make tons of items, make just some item parts that can be combined.

On borderlands, when you see a weapon, that weapon is made out of 12 or more sections, each section gives an stat, and some parts for any given section are just common parts without stats. So they make around 6 or 7 different part for each section and let the game engine mix them together to see what comes out. This gives around more than 6 billion possible weapons, and they made around 400 small part models only, simple solution to have a huge amount of items without having to hand made them all.

I'm gonna need a lot of stash space...;)

Personally I think Borderlands items system is pretty boring. It's very cool at first, but after the initial "wow factor" wears off the items really just start looking generic. I really prefer Titan Quest's designed items as it makes things more unique and visually appealing...especially with end game items.

borderlands also has unique items, but they just made a few.. not a couple 100s...

Right...I'll take Titan Quest's items system with it's thousands of uniques over Borderlands generic items system and handful of uniques any day!

Of course that's just my opinion :p

Someone said something about automods on the TQ.net boards. I thought that was a smashing idea. D2 did a good jorb with this, I think. But do we really need superior items? Or would a "superior" tag brook better break down into better components? If that's the methodology of the game and crafting; as in "I have no idea".

As well, I'd take less items in Unique and set vs hundreds.

Cheers,

Yeah, that's the major [and probably the only] obstacle.

Would this require Editor modifying? I think it probably would :(
