So tell a bit more about the game - I saw a favorable write-up about it in PC Gamer... but it wasn't a review or anything... just said it was a very open game. I was curious about it so anything more you can tell would be interesting...

well im not good at explaining but i ll tell why i see its cool.
1.it is a very open world.
2.there is loot(not a lot that iv found yet it does seem to have alot of rings)
3.fighting style and skills(you learn different attacks when you learn more about the type of weapon)
lock picking, sneaking, pickpocket, acrobatics sword fighting axe fighting(maces and axes same section) bows and spears, magic missiles, smithing,(another thing i find cool you don't just have to make your guy rub his hands evily you gotta take it to the anvil and all that) alchemy scroll making, prospecting, gut animal, fireball and frost
those are character skills that you can find a trainer to teach you.
(there is other spells to magic stuff)
4.the quest! there is a lot of mission in it.
5.there are ruins that "RISEN" from the ground that have loot in them and secret rooms, locked chest.
6.OPTIONS you can either pay the guy money or just beat him up for what you want theirs not only 1 choice.
ALSO YOU MAY GET A DEMO ON STEAM!
if you have any farther questions name the specific qustion. such as list of creatures i can tell you if you want?

To sum it up, Risen is what Gothic 3 wanted to be. If you liked the Gothic Series, especially Gothic 2, you will love Risen. You basically play as a nameless man landing on an island that is shaken by earthquakes which reveal ruins from where evil tries to destroy the island ;)
So you find yourself on that island, follow quests, become a part of one of the three factions, learn and improve your stats & skills, earn yourself new armour and coin which you spend on potions, weapons & stuff.
As I said, much like Gothic (Piranha Bytes being the developer) but without the bugs (since the publisher is not JoWood) ;)

Of course it doesn't look like Risen hence Risen was released finished
But comparing those two games brings up a lot of similarities including such features as alchemy, smithing, skills in general, npc-beheaviour and comparing all the visual aspects of both, it is all to clear that Risen evolved out of Gothic 3 - luckily without a publisher like JoWood.
And yes, three factions. You can either become a bandit, a guard or a mage. Much like Gothic 2 where you could become either a paladin (starting as a guardsman), a (fire) mage or a hired blade (=bandit) - oh, did I mention the similarities between the Gothic-games and Risen? :D

there is no "bad type" DRM in Risen either as a most important note.
It runs perfectly, Ive logged over 20 hours in it and its a lot of fun. There are a few factions to join and play with and Ive had more fun just replaying it in the factions with a different class type then anything.
I have never encountered a showstopper bug "unlike gothic 3" and its quite possibly my Oblivion killer.
The game is as hard as you want it to be. Keep pushing forward and your going to get your ass handed to you. but relax and move though the world a little slower and more intelligently and you'll be highly rewarded.
the 3rd faction is the straight casters, not the warrior/caster hybrid that fights with staffs. Oh you can scribe your own scrolls for spells and you also have runes and, its just so wonderful and it feels solid. you literally can be what ever you want.
be warned this is "NOT" a game for mister casual face punch explode. This is more of a thinkers game who likes to have a challenge and not have the game served to them on a silver platter.

I always liked the gothic series better than the elder scrolls. They seemed to have a more limited world, but with a much better atmosphere - it felt more real.
Risen is great, but I feel it's much less content-rich than Gothic 3. Gothic 3 would've been a lot better imho, if it wasn't for all the game-breaking bugs and extremely horrible balancing.
I hope they'll continue to expand the Risen universe, as that's one of the things I liked so much about Gothic.

If you want play original Gothic game and true RPG in the same time, with great atmosphere, quests and replayability value, check Gothic 1 and especially Gothic 2 NOTR. It doesnt have nowadays graphic blings, but it has rich content, deep story and top-notch dialogs. No game will deliver same climax and gameplay anymore.
Arcania: A Gothic Tale, developed by Spellbound - that will be released this year - will be Gothic 4, but only by name and some NPCs from previous Gothics. Still, Im waiting for this game. It should be way better and interesting then Risen or Gothic 3..which needless to say, was disaster in every aspect.
I played Risen, its made by Piranha Bytes who did original Gothic 1 and Gothic 2 + NOTR exp, but it has none to do with Gothic games apart from same developers. Of course they added some Gothic PB remarks, like hidden stashes on roofs, Lizardmen, and music composed by Kai Rosenkran (which is great btw), but thats about it.
It was good (abit short) game - let alone flaky combat system and retarded AI patchfinding - but it had nothing that pushed you back to play it again; thats what I felt when I ended it...or actually I didn't because after Chapter 2 its practicaly nothing to do, no new quests/side quests etc. You have every possible weapons, armor, picked/opened every thing - you just search some Titan armor parts/weapon for final boss fight. I just skipped this and lounched G2 NOTR again.

Gothic 3 gets a lot of flack from gamers, but like you I really liked it. The world really feels alive and I thought the town liberation thing was a cool mechanic.
Risen is a really great game too, though the last 5-6 hours of it really isn't as good as the first part...and the end boss is such a disappointment.

The latest fan patch for Gothic 3 really makes the game playable. No more stun lock and melee is a lot better as a choice. Instead of straight magic or bow and then basically winning the game. Sad it took like 4 years for it to become what it should have been at launch.

Heh, yea community patches ftw! :) I might try it out again.
But still, Gothic 1 was a real pearl in its time (despite the clunky controls). The biggest problem I had with Gothic 3 was that your hero was overpowered from level 1 on. In Gothic 1 and 2, you really had to fight your way up; you could go anywhere, but even attacking a lowly townguard would end badly. You constantly had to gauge your skill, it really felt you were exploring the world to its fullest extent. The balance was great there.
But with Gothic 3, the balance was out of hand from the get-go, you had to butcher a town filled with orcs as your very first action. Although that apparantly didn't work for subsequent towns on very low level, it still felt broken throughout the game.
The world was incredibly big and varied though (comparing it to Oblivion, I found Oblivion's world to be boring, repetitive and rather unappealing).
I think Risen was a step back from the grandness of Gothic 3; but also a step closer to Gothic 1 and 2. Not the best game in that series, but at least not bugged either and better balanced.

In Gothic 1 I liked 'The stranger' quest most, this was best quest idea ever, you had to really think to find this books... where did such great RPG have gone. Now games are more and more easy just to appeal - I dont know - 6 year olds, and people that are slow.
BTW Im waiting for Risen expansion too, wonder when they plan to release it. They should make this expansion just like NOTR expanding island etc.
