View Full Version : Would you play Diablo II again?

A friend of mine has made something very cool for the ARPG community, he has decided to revive that legend of a game that most of us have played.

But before you brush off this thread thinking it'll probably be a weak attempt at reviving the game consider the following (which are in-game as I'm writing this now):

*Gold is valuable
*Gems are more valuable than before and also very rare
*Runes are purchasable, however the change to gold coins makes them quite expensive
*No hacks or exploits what so ever, I mean it, he's acually running Warden (battle.net's cheat detection program) the way it was meant to be ran, if Blizzard actually cared about the game.
*Players Driven Content where the user's suggestions on new runewords, magic modifiers, uniques, features and other things will be considered.
*(Little piece of history here) Abandoned concepts such as tampered items (Clicky (http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/1019/tampereditems.png)) are being reworked and put back into the game.
*New cube recipes
*Bigger screen resolutions - the D2 graphics can't be upgraded but at least it won't look pixelated on 1920x1020 screen resolution.
And many more small details.

Interested? Then read on.
To become part of the revolution grab a flail and swing wildly, while you wait for Diablo to install, swing clockwise. Afterwards do this:

How to ConnectYou can connect to d2ation in three easy steps.

make sure you have Diablo II: Lord of Destruction Installed and Patched to 1.12a || 1.13c
Patch 1.12a can be found here (http://ftp.blizzard.com/pub/diablo2exp/patches/PC/).

add a new gateway using this tool (http://www.icyhell.net/2008/05/06/blizzard-battlenet-gateway-editor-v3010702/).
Name: d2ation Zone: -6 IP: 70.38.117.77 or n2ation.net

Connect, make an account, Enjoy!
Optional:

d2ation supports d2loader 1.12a, which can be found here.
d2ation also supports D2Multires, read it about it here.

In order to play in better looking resolutions make sure you patch the game to 1.12a not the latest 1.13c, since the multiresolution isn't working on the latest patch (for now).

Very cool, but to the question...no...I don't think I'd play it again. The game just feels too old for me now. I even tried going on battle.net not long ago and could only stomach the game until about level 40.

Anyways, I hope your friend is successful with this.

I have sadly tried to go back but there really is no reason for me too when I can simply play TQ. Good luck though I wish you all the best.

Mods, yes. I'm waiting for Blackened 4b for D2LOD and I play Median XL... Very good mod and the uber challenge content is fantastic. One of the best mods I've ever played.

I'd be playing it right now if I could get it to work online, and had friends to play with, they're often busy.

EDIT:On second thought, no thanks....this is a server hosted by some of the folks behind Blizzhackers...no thanks. The widescreen mod that came from that community was nothing but a keylogger, and the blizzhacker forums are some of the most juvenile and unfriendly places on the net. Sorry friend...with that kind of pedigree, i'm keeping as far away from it as I can. I'll stick to Median XL.

I personally get too bored while playing D2. The drop rate is bad and it just doesn't feel as rewarding as TQ does. No amount of mods would change that for me personally.
It was good for its time, but I have trouble keeping interest when I try to go back & revisit it.

Hi5 Zidders! MedianXL!

Do you play on realm?

Also: Scryer, you might enjoy MXL. I've said it before, but it's a unique experience, while based off of Diablo 2 LOD.

I just reinstalled D2 and LOD, I need to get median redownloaded, as I lost the harddrive D2 was on previously. I'll definately check out Median online, if that's what realm is...i'll most likely have a barb named 'zidders' there...or a druid, i've been wanting to play around with that class. I'll figure SOMEThing out.

I've never been a 'hard core' player, tho....I kinda suck at building really good characters.

I tried going back once after playing TQ and couldn't do it for long, I will still play the original Diablo here and there, can't get enough of that dark, gritty & still kinda eerie feeling.

I'm sticking with Din's Curse for now. That should be sufficient to tide me over until Grim Dawn and Diablo 3 come along.

Yep yep. Over the years I've been going back to the original Diablo because of the atmosphere; I'm fairly certain those who prefer D1 to D2 are in the minority. I tried replaying D2 last year over MP and I just couldn't play longer than a few hours.

And to TheRani - absolutely. Din's Curse has been fueling my ARPG addiction for weeks now and it shows no sign of slowing. I even re-installed TQ and as pretty as that game is, I still find myself going back to DC because of the sheer randomness of it all.

I still play it every now and then, but nothing serious, just casual gaming. I'm juggling with D2, TQ and Torchlight these days. :D

If you are interested in trying DII again, there is a mod you would probably like.

It is called 'Eastern Sun'...it started off as a sort of japanese mod but has ended up as basically a perfect version of Diablo 2.

It doesn't change the core game much, but expands on it - amazingly balanced class skills (in that almost every build is viable and feels powerful), tons of extra loot (about 3 times the unique items), new levels (including one or two insane ones), more bag space, shared stash and tons of other things.

Google it and give it a look - in my opinion, this is the perfect way to get back into the game (without it feeling totally different ala Median).

Eastern Sun is ok...

I'm trying a mod called Sanctus, it's similar and OK as well.

all these are on D2M.

I still play D2 at least once a week for a few hours, i've been too absorbed with Hellgate:London this week to play D2 tho. Median XL mod for D2 rocks.
