View Full Version : Pre-Orders and Steam

As I see it, it the future my games will be in either my steam account or blizzard account. Anything else wouldn't feel like owning (digital games). It's about the community and knowing the game files are always available.
Here's my question.
Will activating the CD-key in steam be a possibility? I'm talking about the key I would receive if I pre-ordered now.
I have no idea if game owners need to pay steam for this extra perk. Or if the owners are allowed to give free copies without cost to them. (a person choosing to get the game on steam versus directly through your site).
What are your views on this?
I would pre-order now if I might be able to get the game on steam when it's ready.
Then again buying directly from the developers means more money go the them and less to the distribution medium...

To release on Steam, you actually have to submit a demo of your game for approval. It is hard to imagine that Grim Dawn wouldn't be approved but, of course, we can't say it is guaranteed at this point. Once approved, it should be possible to transfer pre-order accounts to Steam as has been done with other indie developers such as Wolfire's Overgrowth: http://blog.wolfire.com/2009/02/overgrowth-faq/#q10
As I said though, we fully expect this will be the case but we obviously can't guarantee it until it happens.

I came looking with this exact question and the answer is good enough for me.
Pre-ordered!

Are there any plans to release on Stardock's Impulse service? I have Steam too, but I generally prefer to get my games from Impulse whenever possible, because I love Stardock's philosophies and they seem like less of an overwhelming juggernaut than Steam. I'd just rather send the publishing cut their way than Valve's (who I still haven't forgiven completly for Left 4 Dead 2: Shoulda Been An Expansion But We Could Sell It For Full Price So We Did)

Well knowing that I might be able to download the game from steam once it's finished is good enough for me to think about getting that Legendary Fan version, since I loved TQ and hope that this game will be even better.
Most likely you will be receiving mine next month, since right now EA/DICE is getting my mothly game money for BC2 :P (as soon as they get the pre-buy up in steam).

Sweet... I was wondering about this as soon as I saw the preorders. Glad to hear it, I'll order myself up some Grim Dawn as soon as my pay comes in for the month (don't go vapourware on me!! <3 ).

Even if it isn't possible, Steam has an option to include executables in your games list, which enable you to start a game from within Steam. People will be able to see what you're playing, but i don't know if people could simply join your multiplayer games from steam.
In all honesty, is there any other reason to use Steam for Grim Dawn? Not saying it is not needed or anything, but maybe there are more reasons to use steam.

Unlimited downloads. From any place and any time.
Possible steam cloud support, storing saves, settings etc on your profile online.
Not to fond of achievments, but i bet some kids are.
probably even more. and its always better to have your games in one place. not to fun having 3-4 different places to get your games from each time you want to play.

Would that be a voluntary transfer or would all key holders be forced to use steam if you got onto the platform as I'd prefer not to be forced to use steam.
Funny you mentioned Wolfire as it's another game I've had on pre-order since Alpha 07 :p

For you guys in this thread curious about GD and steam, there's been a rather large discussion taking place here (http://grimdawn.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1031). A lot of potential pros and cons have been shared and discussed at length.

Living out bush with wireless... I actually hate steam.... sometimes it will work offline.. othertimes it wont.. more often then not I just get cracks for the steam games so I dont have the hassle when my wireless goes down.
I didnt buy the last prince of perisa game till there was a offline hack for it because it used cloud saves, and required a constant connection.
Australia only has around 70% broadband access.. thats not WHO has broadband but rather who could have it if they wanted it.
The AVg speeds are also very low compared to other parts of the world.. some games being released now require a faster connection then my 150kbs/30kbs connection can handle.
Lastly I have a limited bandwidth account.. and STEAM games love to have updates in the gigabytes.
