If you haven't played it yet, I'd suggest buying it on steam, it's $5 from 3/26/10-3/28/10.

I've played it, it's a pretty fun game the first time through, enjoy. ^_^

Yep, it's fun and it's definitely worth it, especially for $5. Got through it first time and forgot about it. Not even try to play other class. Random quest is uninteresting though. But I highly recommend it if you're trying to find Diablo-clone. Have modding community too if you're interested in playing mods.

I liked the idea of the random dungeons that you could buy maps for from merchants. I thought that was quite good for a quick H&S.

I picked it up over the Xmas sale for $10, the very next day they put it on a deal for $5, but hell it was well worth the $10.

I got about 70 hours of gameplay out of it and I could easily see getting more if I didn't have a stack of other games I was playing.

Well the game was worth it for twenty bucks and this is a steal for $5.00. You can also pick it up for $5.00 on their website. I know I stated earlier in other threads that I did not purchase it because I think TQ is still superior but for $5.00 I couldn't resist.

Yup, for this weekend only, you can also buy it directly from the Torchlight website if you don't like Steam's DRM, though ofline modes works, I think.

For sure a very fun game, lot of value packed into $5.

Has the MP fan mod made it public yet?

Last I've read about it, they've got part of it working but still have more stuff to do, no release yet though, that I've found.

So, this is just my personal opinion;
I've recommended it in the past, but now I wouldn't recommend it anymore even if it was free (that's not meant too harsh, I just don't think such a small amount of money should have too much weighing on wether you'll buy it or not - your time is more important). It's sorta interesting, but there's a lot of better titles in the same genre to spend your time on. And it certainly doesn't have any lasting appeal... the lack of multiplayer kinda kills it, especially for such a cheap title (your friends can be convinced to buy such a cheap title for some mp kicks - they're less likely to do that for an expensive title).

It does do some things right, but it doesn't even come remotely close to outweighing the lack of lasting appeal, shallowness and missing multiplayer.

But if you really, truly, desperately need that Diablo kick and you can't get it anymore from one of the more superior clones (e.g. TQ), it's a very good buy.

OR you could play diablo 2 mods (or TQ mods for that matter..)

I thought the ranged combat and dual wield system were more than enough to set the title apart. It was a fun little romp that was nice for a change, and while Titan Quest and Diablo may be superior games, after many many years of playing them and the various mods that are out for them, its just nice to have a change of scenery instead of "Oh look... Greece... again, Oh hey, the Rogue encampment... its not like I haven't seen this place a thousand times before. Oh look... I'm playing a Necromancer for the 50th time."

I am ashamed to say I let this one go by for so long. I hit lvl 10 and have had an absolute blast with this game. It certainly is growing on me...

Yeah, the only thing is... it'll fade soon too. Which is sad. Great little game, though.

It is a great little game. But after playing it for a while, you'll inevitably discover it has no longevity.

I agree YerkYerk, that's mainly due to it's single-player only aspect though, and lack of an overworld.

But beyond that, it's a really nice play-through for the first time, and for $5 it's worth the time just to try something different for a while.

I still want to play their MMO version of the game though, I have a feeling it'll be pretty fun.

Very very true, but then for the same price, neither does a big mac or a cup of Starbucks coffee.

I found that Torchlight had somewhat more longevity than the original Diablo (which I played through twice, and then never again), but less than Diablo II (which kept me amused for many months, trying out different character builds).

a big mac

Yeah, but those keep repeating on you, so you're getting value for money.

Pretty disappointed with Torchlight, after hearing so much good stuff about it.

I found it too boring, so I started over with a hardcore character about 1/3 the way through. Now I'm very near the end with my HC character (on hard), but I just have no desire at all to finish the game.

The game should not be as long as it is, unless they add additional content and variety. You spend too much time fighting the same monsters in the same areas. I was actually expecting a really short game for $20, but they padded it out to lengthen it arbitrarily.

One message I would like to get to developers everywhere:
Make your game as long as your content allows. If you don't have the content to make a long game and keep it fresh throughout, then don't!
Make a short game, and price it accordingly. $20 for a 6 hour game would be just fine, especially in a genre with so much replayability.
Just don't stretch and stretch levels to test our maximum tolerance for boredom. >:[
Most people don't finish games, so don't ruin the first 10 hours that most people will actually experience by stretching it into 20-30 hours.

Anyway... The game's just got no depth, imo.

It is really polished though. It's got awesome sound, music, and the skill/combat animations feel quite powerful and satisfying.

@ Betrayer

Could not agree with you more. Second to Lilith, I have always felt that the best TQ mod would be a "best of" of the original maps. Maybe about 1/2 the size but sure to include the favorite slashing grounds.

For Torchlight, I was bored instantly but I never even figured out if they did the Epic/Legendary type progression as in TQ. But in TQ(IT), to make it through Legendary with 1 toon is a LONG trip. Let alone multiple classes. And yet, that is maybe the most rewarding aspect of the game, getting the stellar end game loot. So again, I just basically totally agree with your point.

The game certainly won't be an end all and I can still play TQ for hundreds of more hours with satisfaction. The only other series that held me as long was Diablo. But hell, I tried to reload Diablo and D2 and I just can't do it anymore. I also am a big graphics whore and TQ looks so beautiful at 1920X1200.

So I was browsing the forums over at Torchlight and some guy over there was going on about how great Torchlight is and how much TQ sucked. I know to each their own, but how could you like ARPG's and not like TQ? I am sure some will come on here and agree with this guy and again, to each their own but I just don't get it.

Torchlight has been fun and all but its nothing like TQ in my opinion. Most, if not all ARPG's are trying to be like Diablo or dethrone Diablo. I think the only game that even comes remotely close is TQ. Anyhow, didn't want to hijack the thread and send it clear off base so I'll stop my maniacal babbling.

Soo my girlfriend is going to buy Torchlight for one of my bday prezzys, so should I ask her to not bother and get me.. er ..a Bigmac? From the vids and reviews Iv'e read, looks/sound to be good fun.

It's pretty good and it's really cheap. Personally however, the lack of depth on a Diabloclone just makes the game feel like a bit of a waste of time, as you'll get too quickly bored on this (and you certainly won't be playing it for the storyline). It just feels like a demo or something.. it's so incredibly limited.

At any rate you'll get extremely good value for your money. You can't do that with the Mac :)

EDIT: I know that sounds contradictory, heh. It's just how that game feels to me. I might return to it and finish the story, but without a proper mp function in it and the limited possibilities in it, I kinda doubt it.

Yeah even though it gets old fast, I did find it totally awesome at least for like 4-5 hours.
I think it's worth playing, especially at $5.
But just don't expect a game that you're going to be playing and replaying for weeks.

I guess some of you are being very harsh on this first effort of the guys who created the genre. I truly believe they have much more ambitious projects and capabilities yet they made this little game to make some cash and start doing what they really want to do (not TL MMO).

The game is very enjoyable with some mods and it's more akin to Fate than Diablo. I too belive it's way too easy as the only challenge I get is by playing Very Hard or Hardcore Hard. Overall, like many others before it, it's a nice filler until the 3rd coming of the King.

The thing I like about Torchlight is that it has heart, and potential. I'm still hoping for multiplayer at some point. We'll see, I guess....my HOPE is that when Torchlight goes to the consoles, it will indeed have multiplayer. Somehow, some way, someone WILL set up MP for TL. Wishfull thinking maybe, but meh....I don't think you can really say you're a fan of rpg's of any kind unless you're a little bit of a dreamer.

Ultimately tho, TQ, Torchlight, Diablo, etc all the action RPG's are their own games, even if they're in the same genre. Titan quest felt a lot like Diablo 2 to me because it had all the things in it that I loved about D2...the quests, all the different areas, the loot, but it was it's own game. Same with Torchlight. I'm looking forward to D3, but we have yet to see if it stands on it's own, never mind living up to the Diablo legacy.
