View Full Version : Request: No Turtles Please
Coridan

I am still in the process of playing through TQ:IT for the very first time, and love it. That being said:
I beg of you, please, no more turtles. I let out long yells, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooo!" every time I see a turtle. If I get a formula that has turtle shells in it, I just vendor it, because there's no way I'm going to kill turtles any longer than I have to. They take forever to kill, and if you're a caster, you miss them half the time because they're so darn low to the ground, so you have to shoot them with your staff... boof.... boof.... DIE ALREADY... boof... boof.... *pulls out hair*. Please. Think of the children.
(Note: This post is only semi serious. I do despise the turtles, though)

Heh, I thought this was going to be about the Overlord and breaking the fourth wall and shit :)
Turtles were a bit uninteresting though. They just took a heavy beating, but you could kill em from a convenient distance. Just taking sooo long. Now if they were backed up by caster turtles and fragile (teenage mutant) ninja turtles, than the tanking turtle would've made a lot more sense.
Or just let them being mounted by Ichtians :D

Sissy! Turtles are only difficult on normal mode, after that they become a joke. (except dave, who is pretty tough.)
I do hope we get some demonic turtles. That would be cool. Anyone play MTG? Wormfang turtle?

Oh they're not difficult, they're just stubborn and don't die fast enough. I can kill the undead, demons, and two headed dogs that spit fire faster than I can kill your run of the mill turtle. I argue that these turtles are already possessed (with the soul of a donkey).

*cough* am in the process of getting my power 9 back again... stupid selling out. On that note: Asylum, you must be one of them new-fangled players, back in my day the only set symbols you needed were: Legends and Arabian Nights.
OT: Damn the turtles! Actually, I really liked the turtles. They were a challenge. I mean, who says you have to kill everything in the game? And yes, I found that it was possible, with a little grind (like all reagents) to get turtleshells.
Cheers,
Malph

It's actually quite confusing when you use OT both for On-Topic as well as Off-Topic..

Yes, I saw that, the one person I adressed happens to be one of the few who makes a clear distinction :)
I didn't mean you specifically though, most people use OT interchangably for both Off-topic and On-topic and usually you can derive from the answer what it is (than again, posting "OT" is kinda senseless if the meaning has to be derived from the post). Oh well, doesn't matter.

Hah, I didn't work on TQ. I would have put in way more turtles.

There are actually a TON of turtles in TQ...more than I think most average players will ever see. They are named 'Overlords'. So why are they there??
Well, while working on TQ, and TQ:IT some of us, myself included, would take breaks walking outside over a little pond/river outside of Clock Tower (Iron Lore's offices). Turtles would sun bathe out on logs and large snapping turtles would occasionally pop their heads up out of the water. It was really cool and relaxing to watch them. So when we were assigned to make ambient creatures for the locations in TQ we decided to add in a turtle as a little thank you to the turtles in that pond. Of course content designers were a bit more mischievous and perhaps it was all the long hours we spent on the project but somehow we started making screenshot/scenes in the editor where the ambient creatures would commit horrible crimes on the NPC's all the while the Overlord would oversee it happen. It became a giant inside joke so much so that the one artist that made the turtle snuck the image into to all of his texture pages as well as into armor sets. I wouldn't doubt it if that artist is still sneaking turtle images into his art on his new projects.
Anyways, that's enough ILE bed time stories for tonight.

That's wicked, although, to be honest, I'm just as happy not knowing.

I thought the turtles were good monster "tanks" in the game. They moved slow, so if you didn't want to fight them, you could get away from them easy. Turtle shells only went in shields, so if you didn't use shields, then just run away. The animations on them were well done. I also like the way that they had a ranged attack, whatever it was that they spit up. I would have liked some more variation on the colors. It seemed like they were all about the same color, even the hero ones.
There were too many one-hit kills in the game anyway. Something with a little armor and didn't one-hit kill you was kinda nice.

True, but by the point that you got to the IT part of the game, if you weren't shield based you had a million of them. Maybe make it sheilds and torso armor. The shell goes over the torso of the turtle anyway.

OK - fair point. Those who started to play, when the original TQ was released, probably ended up with too many turtle shells. I started with TQ:IT directly about 2 years ago.

Okay so what I am getting out of this request is to remove the creature that took the longest time to kill. That's an easy fix. Just don't have a creature that takes longer to kill than any other. Solved. Any more problems like that?

No. We need fireball-spitting turtles that fire spikes out of their shells every couple seconds. And sharks with laserbeams attached to their heads. And exploding kamikaze llamas.
What we need are undead turtles.
Undead Turtle! (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9a/Galapagos_Turtle_skeleton.jpg)
Look at that and tell me that wouldn't be awesome to kill. Come on, do it. You can't? Of ****** course not!

What we need are undead turtles.
Yeah, but they have to be zombie turtles as there will not be any skellies.
I personally love skeletons but I don't think they fit with the fictional explanation for undead in Grim Dawn. I mean, if I thought they were going to make the game better I'd work them in anyway but, as much as I enjoy traditional fantasy undead, I think a change of pace can be refreshing too.

Draining them of fluids would probably make them not as structurally sound. :P

Sure, but I'd imagine their blood has congealed so much that it barely flows anymore. You'd have to make some mighty big holes in their body, and at that point, you might as well start disarming their limbs.

It all depends... are we talking classic zombies or bio-zombies?

Perhaps a very small chance that upon entering an area all the normal monsters are replaced with turtles possessing terrifying tenacity and the goal of pounding our protagonists.
You know, like a cow level that just kinda...happens. No obscure item combination required.

Hellgate London had these in it's online mode.
Some rare times a level suddenly would be like fire-enchanted, with flames everywhere, and burning enemies that dealt fire damage... and then game would crash, not able to handle all the fire particle effects.
But apart from the problem that it didn't work technically, the idea that levels could exist in magic, rare and legendary versions (with different random modifiers attached - like extra fire damage) seemed kinda cool to me ;)

Why not use a dimensional portal spawn creature that appears at random, like in Torchlight?
That way, you allow the player to choose to do the freaky challenging level. You could also "lock" the level once the player enters, removing the exit and disabling town portals.

It could be an occasionally occurring weather phenomenon ... seriously, I like the idea, especially if it becomes part of the lore but not just a freak game event.
