Greetings fellow "Grim-Dawn-Awaiters",
There is nothing quite like a Kickstarter project to get you the feeling that your opinion may matter in the making of the game. :p Thus, I have decided to talk about Skill Combos. I can understand this will very likely never be very high on the to do list, but ideas are meant to be shared and no harm in discussing it, even if it's just a pipe dream.
Anywho, I have played through a lot of ARPG's during my feeble existence (both Diablo; both Sacred; Loki; Avencast; Torchlight; Titan Quest and its expansion; etc etc) and what attracts me to those games are the skill systems. I could care less about the loot (I know, blasphemy) as long as I can make purdy spells and see the character grow more powerful.
Now, in my opinion, the idea of mixing skills to have different and/or more advantageous effects is an attractive one, especially in a game where you can create hybrid builds. I do think it'd be exciting to have 1-2 skills that would mesh with one another to add a more homogeneous feeling to the whole character build.
For now the knowledge of the skills available is quite limited, but ideas are easy to come by: A previously frozen enemy when attacked with a especially devastating blow could guarantee a critical hit and be shattered if it died from it. A combination of a stun with a confusion spell could increase the chance of the enemy being in fact confused and attack other mobs. The (in)famous grease+fireball spell combination. I could go on and on ad nauseam.
I would assume that this would not only be agreeable to the eye (it's always flashy to be able to see different animations, especially if they require more than just clicking), but also add another tactical layer to combat, provided it was balanced well enough. Putting traps on the floor and knocking a mob to them to ensure extra damage, and other little treats would make one be more attentive to the surroundings and aim to recreate those special conditions.
I don't mean making the combat system revolve around this idea (à la Magicka); more in the veins of the spell combinations in Dragon Age (though less overpowered... I still remember breezing through with two mages doing perfect storms all around).
Ah well, just a thought, and I apologize if I am overly verbose ;)
