other than Grim Dawn and Diablo 3, there is another arpg that i'm waiting for. It is hinted several years ago, to continue it franchise, but done with partying aprg, they said it's gonna be a one-man hack&slash arpg. but no updates since.
guess who said it and what game it is?:D

Ever thought about adding Grim Dawn & Diablo 3 to the list ?
I know they aren't out yet, but they are ARPG's.
Or do you want to just list ones that are out ?
BTW
I have no clue as to what the game you hinted is..?
alexei

yep, i said it at the last but i think I should add it into the list with quote expected release year. about the hints, let spill the answer later ;p

Space Hack -crap
Depths of Peril -fun game with unique twist on genre, but very indie so be warned
Kivi's Underworld -casual indie hack and slash, ok if don't mind the low production values
Din's Curse -upcoming game from same developers of Depths of Peril and Kivi's
Also, Silverfall is pretty much a Diablo close to the 'T', including click control.
And to your "hint"...is it Dungeon Siege series? Only game in the genre I can think of with a partying mechanic...

Myeah, two adventure RPG's; (not action, but seeing as you have the Witcher and Fable in there also)
Gothic series
Risen
Elder Scrolls series

Is it another Divinity game ?

There's another one I played that I just remembered...just can't recall the name. It's point and click and pretty much a Diablo clone, but set in a more futuristic setting. You get shotguns, machineguns, ect...graphics were ok...about as good as Diablo 2. I think it was released in europe first, but also has a version in english.
Doh...can't figure out the name :D
I think it starts with a "R"...
Also, I'd say Borderlands is pretty Diablo-ish.

Do you really think Diablo 3 is going to be released in 2012 ?
I hope not. I was hoping early or mid 2011 (the latest).
I just have very little patience. :p

idk why every one is so exited about diablo 3. and i don't know how the hell you can match it with every game. every one says every games diablo-ish. BORDERLANDS is not anything like diablo. and i wouldn't be surprised if diablo 3 came out in 2020. knowing how long freiken blizzard is really slow. they have bin making starcraft 2 for like what 10-20 years. already and its about another 1-2 years more. then what i get even less blizzard likes to charge money for every thing. the game doesn't come with protos and zerg only terran campaign and multiplayer all races..........

The original Diablo was ground breaking and it set a lot of standards. A lot of games have followed the Diablo formula.
Almost a decade later Diablo II is still an amazing game. It was definitely before its time.
Starcraft (1998), Diablo II (2000/Expansion 2001), and Warcraft 3 (2002/Expansion 2003) are still played by large numbers of people from around the world. There was also WoW which was released in 2004 and its expansions.
One thing Blizzard can do is make stunning games. Them taking a few years to release games may seem suck-ish. But this is why their games are freaking awesome. They don't rush things. I don't care if it takes them ten years before experiencing their next wave of games.

It just optimistic guess. And i think you better forget about D3. Dont wait for it. Just let it go and when it finally come out, rejoice!

Diablo is the set standard for ARPG. They start the concept of ARPG, although of course there are influence from various genre. Well, if you don't agree, could you spell any game before diablo with point&click hack&slash, isometric, loots and questing? The GD said it in the about page
Grim Dawn will attempt to better perfect the magical formula of exploration, character advancement, and loot collection pioneered by Diablo.
Extended releases date mean either: they failed it or they want to polish more. Based on track record, Blizzard have long list of extended development for their title: starcraft 1, starcraft 2, diablo 2, i don't know about warcraft 3. But all the title turn out great and an excellent product nonetheless. Diablo 1 on the other hand is a rather rush product for blizzard and they learn from it.
stalker take 6 year to finish although when it announce it is set to release in 2 years. and it turn out a great title. that commitment and dedication. salute to GSC.

Yep I'm pretty sure it is in this year. And actually beta is near. Or might be better, they might push it with real product a surprise. i read this yesterday
Starcraft 2 beta (http://www.incgamers.com/Games/1407/News/20698/starcraft-2-beta-closing-in--again)
If it is not coming this year, it will be a REAL letdown. And I hope it is ready by March although it is unbecoming.

maybe if Blizzard would stop putting out so many WoW expansions then they could actually get work done on their other projects.

no offense just joking ;p
Yep ghost was cancelled. and warcraft adventure (before Warcraft 3) too. that's just proved that they are the kind of guys who wouldn't release title that they are unsatisfied with. considering they already pouring some million dollar into it, that commitment i would say.

And to your "hint"...is it [B]Dungeon Siege series? Only game in the genre I can think of with a partying mechanic...
ops almost forgot about the hint. Yes it is Dungeon Siege. Chris Taylor hinted it in June 2008 about Dungeon Siege 3. This is his quote.
"There will be some things that are very much like Dungeon Siege 1 and 2, but some things will be simplified. I am done with multi-character parties; I really think that it's all going to be about a single hero. It's too much to manage."
search for 'dungeon siege 3' and you will find news about it around that time.

and i think they canceled star craft ghost to put some features of star craft ghost in star craft 2.
and also i think with all of those addicted wow players. that blizzard may-be just getting money from there wow. to make the new game of the year.hopefully its not just for the money.

I played that one a few times.
Neat things about it:
The quests in each game were randomly chosen from a list of possible quests, and they were usually more interesting than, "Please kill Axejuggler the Giant Spider and bring me his Silver Mace".
You got to pick not one, but two characters to play, and you could easily switch between them. Whichever one you weren't playing at the moment would be controlled by the computer like a mercenary or pet.
There were 4 classes (fighter, wizard, priest, thief) all available in male or female.
Lousy things about it:
They tried to make it too realistic, by adding weapon breakage and repair, food requirements, and worst of all, Aging. The other two I could deal with, but the character aging was a pain in the rear, ruining for me what was otherwise a fairly fun (if not very original) game. As your characters aged ridiculously quickly, it wasn't unusual to discover that your initially 20-year old character was now pushing 40 after just a handful of quests. If your characters got too old, their experience gain rate would slow to a crawl, and they'd even start losing stats.
If there was a way to turn off the aging thing, I'd have liked it more.

From what I've read, making it work in Windows 7 involves editing the Windows registry. Even if I unearthed my old Darkstone CD, I wouldn't bother with it. The aging thing bugged me too much.

It was a pain. Once in a while the potion store might stock a youth potion if you were lucky. Or if you were really lucky, the game would randomly generate the special quest where you could find several youth potions, but it doesn't change that it was a pain in the rear, and it was mostly luck that determined whether your character got old and feeble. For me, it got to the point where keeping my characters young and healthy was more important than the actual saving the world thing. A game mechanic that is so tedious that it becomes a more important concern to the player than actually doing the main quest and normally progressing through the game = Fail.

Overlord close to the aRPG genre? How come?
I'm not gaming genre guru, or definition nit, but from what I've read it's placed in RPG, aRPG, Action-Adventure, etc. It has some elements of aRPG, not a typical aRPG game, and not a Diablo clone. No matter the actual genre, I put it in the same space and I found it to be a fun game.
yerkyerk - your opinion?

If Overlord is considered an ARPG then Sacrifice is that as well...
alexei
02-10-2010, 04:00 PM
Nope, I played Overlord and it's not an ARPG. It's an adventure with ability to control minion plus puzzle. You upgrade your equipment and castle but not loot them. It's sure is fun and beautiful but it's not an ARPG. When I say ARPG, it's the one with resemblance to Titan Quest or Diablo, if not close. Loot, hack&slash, skill, class. All this element is essential.
alexei
02-10-2010, 04:03 PM
I heard about Sacrifice but never played them. But isn't it a RTS? I thought i read somewhere about some ties with blizzard. Not sure.

Mage Knight Apocalypse: Quite possibly the greatest little thing Ive seen in a long time. Its skill system revolved around use. if you didn't use a skill, it didn't level up. there were no points to spend or anything like that, your play style directly dictated the coarse of the game, and as you played and your tactics changed so did your player.
Gotta add that Loki, Darkstone, Divine Divinity (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/divine_divinity), Avencast: Rise of the Mage, are must plays in my book. Especially Avencast, its just a lot of fun and absolutely worth a look! Hand of god isn't to bad either, but its a little rough around the edges...
Silverfall is fantastic as well worth every penny i paid, and its standalone successor Silverfall: Earth Awakening kinda fixes all the little things SF had as short comings... It trully is a fully 3D relaised Diablo 2
Sacred (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/sacred_gold) is quite amazing... great story and it'll really suck you in if you let it. The classes are alot of fun, and who wouldn't want to be a small crazy dwarf with a massive iron cannon, or a pissed off shadow knight that controls the undead and can still whoop your butt is a sword fight?
Gothic 1 (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/gothic), Gothic 2 (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/gothic_2_gold_edition): these are the hardcore ARPG's these will test your ability to not break your keyboard, but in the end it all pays off. personally not my taste as challenges make me like a hulk after stubbing his toe while trying to get to the bathroom.
Shadowgrounds (simple fun shootemup Action RPGish game)
SpaceSiege (not worth it but gotta mention for completeness)
Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/arcanum_of_steamworks_and_magick_obscura)
Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/lionheart_legacy_of_the_crusader) This is sort of a fantastic RPG which turns into a Diablo style ARPG half way though. Its quite fun though but the abrupt change in gameplay may put some people off.
Arx Fatalis (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/arx_fatalis)
Mythos (soon to be free to play along with Hellgate)
Jade Empire -- perfection in gaming, BioWare at there best!
Risen (a must play, the perfect action rpg game imo... i could literally talk for hours about this game)
Crusader No Regret: is pretty good but thats going DOS old school...
Blade and Sword: its basically Diablo style gameplay in the east... ive been looking for this game for years just to own a piece of history but its a hard little bugger to track down.
Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/vampire_the_masquerade_redemption) was mentioned earlier as well, its not to bad of a game... i bought it myself and quite like it. but it changes pace alot and its full of unique gameplay... choosing between weapons micromanaging teammates and your skills/abilities. the game itself is linear and ability's are handed off as you progress though the story. But it really is enjoyable if your into this genre
Bottom line it comes to Avencast: Rise of the Mage, Silverfall , or Mage Knight Apocalypse because I love weird stuff and these are 3 of the most unique ARPG like titles i've ever played ^_^

Anybody read about Kingdom Under Fire 2 ?
It's sort of an Action/RTS. KUF1 was an X-Box exclusive, & it was very fun. You got to go into battle controlling groups, & you could equip them with spells & equipment. It had archers, cannons, infantry, wyverns, & a whole lot more. The sequel (KUF2) will be released for XB 360 & PC (no official word on a PS3 version ?). It's one of my most anticipated games of 2010.
Here is the home page:

You can also watch some game-play vids here:
http://media.xbox360.ign.com/media/142/14231228/vids_1.html
Its in Korean, but the finished game will have multiple languages.

Dungeon Siege 2 is a great game, the Ai system really isnt that bad and you can make the game "nearly" turn based with the pause system and micromanaging. If you prefer you can let the Ai do everything and they can honestly handle themselves rather well. The interactions between party members are funny, sad, cute, and vicious. After playing the game a solid 4 times (it takes a few weeks to a month to beat for me) I can say im still surprised by dialogue i hear between quest events, the world, and my party members.
It feels good, it plays like Titans Quest in the "woldscape" as a static land and its easy to pick up where you left off. but its LONG, were talknig TQ:IT long or longer, and it'll really give you a run for your money.
i love it, me and my wife have had 2 co-op sessions from start to finish and we also have single player solo sessions saved. Its quite possibly the smartest game buy i ever made next to TQ:IT and Diablo 2:LoD
My favorite feature is the ability to swap skills around and actually mold your player, and if you wish never use a party member and survive soley on summons and pets. (YOU can have a freaking dragon or a sadomasochistic fairy in black leather) The pets in the game are fantastic, and you can "feed" them armor, items, spells and weapons to enhance them on top of there levels stats and innate spells gained over time....
Ok, im installing this again, thanks a lot... LMAO
You will not be disappointed in this game, and I can vouch for DS1 as well, its fun too but not as polished as DS2, by polished i mean a sparkling jewel in the ARPG landscape that is the real! Dont be surprised if you find yourself developing an emotional attachment to your party members. After all you are creating them from scratch and molding there abilities while they still retain atonomy in a way with there voice acting and interactions with the PC
One more thing, Pack Mules... thats all i have to say :)

I am new here and this is my first post. I am looking forward to seeing Grim Dawn completed.
I do not understand why it is taking so long for Diablo 3 to come out?
I know loads of people have been waiting ages for it to come out, years, yet it has been announced and talked about and the release date never seems to get any closer?
Of course you can't make a good game overnight, but I am starting to think it will never be released! Surprising in the current economic climate, when a game is so highly anticipated and guaranteed to be a commercial success for the makers?

Starcraft 2 was announced before Diablo 3. SC2 now has a promising release time frame now. Give it time once SC2 goes live that will free up some resources for Blizz.

Dungeon Siege 2 is a great game,[...]
You nearly had me reinstalling it. I can just totally agree - DS2 is such a great game and it definitely does not deserve the bad reviews it got. Played through it a couple of times, had a little nerveous-breakdown when my high-end party, which had beaten all dificulties, finished its first run through broken world, entered the next difficulty and completely crashed - without having a backup. Still pulled another 2 groups through the whole game.
Anyway, I just read "The Witcher" and can't leave without dropping one or two lines (or maybe a dozen more) about this game.
To sum it up, The Witcher is probably one of the best games of the last years being brilliant from the beginning to the end. With this game you get a nearly perfect RPG blended with just the right dose of action. The story is addictive, the choices you are making throughout the game always coming back on you. There's skilling, looting and some of the most intese bossfights I ever had. You can even mix up your potions and enhance your Charakter in a lot of different ways. Try to get a hand on the enhanced edition, which is something like a totally revised version of the original with tons of improved and added content.

I played The Witcher (enhanced edition) and was rather dissapointed at what it was. An unnecessarily complicated interface and the action in-game didn't ever feel 'real'. Sure, the moves were cool, but it looked more like watching a movie sequence than actually controlling your character.
I don't think it'd qualify for the Diabloclone genre though. It fits more in the more classic adventure RPGs, such as Oblivion, Morrowind, Gothic, Risen and the like.

The Witcher enhanced edition was a version with the euro censorship issues resolved, all launch artwork was replaced in the us region release. Also the free massive expansion packs are included and there is a NOCD patch applied so its future proofed. As it stands without the enhanced edition you need an internet connection to even install the enhanced version and all the additional content.
I personally own the original collectors and im going to grab the enhanced edition off amazon one of these pay weeks. its completely worth it.
Also, i recommend Two Worlds whole heatedly. This is by far a very fun game, if you can get past the extremely bad voice acting then it turns out to be alot of fun. In the same vein of Risen, Oblivion, and a little Gothic its definitely one to not miss. I also suggest getting the gold editon. Be warned there is a crapton of DRM on board and does require an internet connection on first install.

It's good! I had a blast with DS2. I played through normal about 5 times with different builds, but it's really only fun if you play MP.
Dude. Wheres my MP?!

I think its called Restricted Area. Its made by the creators of Legend Hand Of God. I didnt like it... But Legend was OK.

I know this thread is really old, but I recently compiled a list of games that I consider to be the type of ARPG that I enjoy the most.
Diablo, Diablo 2, Diablo 3 (2011)

Champions of Norrath, Champions: Return to Arms
X-men Legends, X-men Legends 2
Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2
Justice League Heroes
Dungeon Siege, Dungeon Siege 2, Dungeon Siege 3 (2011)
Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade, Untold Legends: The Warrior's Code, Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom
Torchlight, Torchlight 2 (2011)
FATE, FATE: Undiscovered Realms, FATE: The Traitor Soul, FATE: The Cursed King (2011)
Sacred, Sacred 2
D&D Heroes, D&D Daggerdale (2011)
Hunter: The Reckoning, Hunter: The Reckoning: Redeemer, Hunter: The Reckoning: Wayward
DarkStone
The Bard's Tale
Titan Quest
DeathSpank, DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue
Lord of the Rings: War in the North (2011)
Grim Dawn
Dungeon Hunter, Dungeon Hunter 2, Dungeon Hunter Alliance (2011)
Darkspore (2011)
And others that are similar in style but look/feel a bit more like shooters (to me):
Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime (2011)
Alien Swarm
Alien Shooter, Alien Shooter 2
Zombie Shooter, Zombie Shooter 2
Shadowgrounds, Shadowgrounds: Survivor
Nation Red
Alien Breed: Impact, Alien Breed 2: Assault, Alien Breed 3: Descent
Space Siege
And to me, League of Legends et al. just feel like a fast-paced pvp version of an ARPG. :p

That's a great list...even includes obscure ones like Shadowflare.
Anyways I grabbed Monster Hunter Tri this weekend. Only got about an hour in but so far not sure if I am going to really enjoy it.

I played the beta of the first Monster Hunter on PS2 way back when and I couldn't stand it. Haven't tried getting into the series since. :undecided:

Haha, someone mentioned restricted area. That game is pretty cool, except for the whole, SCREAMS MP gameplay yet has none.
