View Full Version : Typhon - Original Titan Quest

Always wondered this, but why did the Typhon boss encounter change in TQ? In the original you could smash the statues and remove some of his special attacks, but either in a patch (or maybe with IT expansion) they removed this aspect.
I thought the way it used to work was much cooler and felt more strategic, although the encounter is still cool because you have to be on your toes when fighting Typhon...the meteors and thorns can be especially brutal.

I always thought it was so you no longer target the statues instead of Typhon himself.

I myself wondered this, & really didn't like the way it was changed. It also made typhon MUCH harder.
I always just assumed it was because some people were whining that the last boss (Typhon) was way too easy. I've heard one crybaby say that he could beat him in 20 seconds (yeah, whatever...maybe with a buffed out character on normal difficulty).
I never thought Typhon was easy. By destroying the statues he became more manageable, but easy....naa.
But I don't know if that is why.

He was easier...can't really argue with that. I thought they could have balanced the encounter though instead of changing it completely.

I've never played the game with the statues trick. I did wonder how that'd feel like.
But I would reckon that it'd be a battle that got easier the longer you fought (should get harder, would've made more sense). So, first you're having a hard time, than you smash a statue and if you managed that, you've jumped the biggest hurdle. The rest of the fight would be easier; which is not very exciting. Dunno if that was the reasoning behind it though.
I'm actually interested in how a pre-1.30 (or whenever they fixed it) Typhon encounter would feel like.

What did you think I was going to talk about? I mentioned the boss's name in the title lol.
I never understood this whole spoiler thing...it's not like people can't...ya know...stop reading. :p
Anyways, it's not even a spoiler as that's not the way the boss works anymore...even in the original TQ. Now that I think about it this was removed in a patch.

For one thing, Typhon wasn't nearly as spastic. Personally I think the new Typhon acts like he is on meth or something.

I was only joking =). Besides, after a game has been out for more than 5 years, I say any part of it is free to discuss.

Not to mention it's a completely different game from what the forum is based on.
I never fought typhon without IT... :( I installed IT right at Chang'an. SO disappointed lol. Ah well. Anyone know if the statues are still in TQ 1.3?(the latest version)

I'm not sure if I would call it a "trick", but okay. I never tried beating Typhon without destroying the statues before the patch, so I can't say if he acts the same or not (although I assume he does).
Besically by destroying the statues his attacks become weaker. His ability to steal health from you is reduced, & he is overal easier, but that is still not the same thing as "easy". I personally thought he was still a good fight after destroying the statues. it's just that now that he's so difficult (because you can't destroy the statues) he may seem "easy" by comparison.
BTW
I remember fighting him after the patch, and I was like...."why can't I break the statues?" ..."Ahhhhh!"
Then Typhon pwns me & hands me my arse.
I was real surprised when I couldn't break the statues.;)

Which version did you prefer, shawnmck?
I prefered to beat Typhon before the patch.
But I never had any problems with the original either, so I can't say (nor can I remember) how the patch affected anything else.
I just die way too often trying to beat him. He does his life steal & poison attacks which just drain my health fast.
BTW
I like to use melee characters, & maybe that's part of the reason why he kills me so easily..?
I hear using a bow is much easier against him, but I don't like to use them.
Renevent
01-28-2010, 10:09 PM
Yeah, in his current form melee and pet characters have a much harder time with him.
Actually, that's pretty interesting that you brought that up...because for ranged/spell-casters the fight is pretty much the same both ways. The way it was before, I think it helped even out the fight for melee/pet class so they could knock his attacks down.
shawnmck
01-28-2010, 10:17 PM
I have two melee characters (one that dual-wields, & the other that uses sword/shield combo) that have a hard time against him...
but I also have a caster build that summons Core Dweller & Liche King that has an easier time with him. When they die I just re-summon them.
I've read opinions that the Core Dweller & Liche king is not a good team, but I've had plenty of success with them. The CD draws almost all attacks while the LK deals damage from a distance.
But I never thought that the harder Typhon ruined the game either. It was just an obstacle that needed to be overcome so that I could continue to enjoy the rest of the game.:p
Renevent
01-28-2010, 10:20 PM
I meant the wolves...both Lich King and Core Dweller and pretty awesome tanks...and with that combo I imagine you do most of the damage dealing?
For classes where pets are the primary damage, especially with wolves, he's a pain because he kills the really fast.
shawnmck
01-28-2010, 10:31 PM
I've tried the wolves, & the other pets as well. It just seems to me that most pets have a difficult time with him (& other bosses & groups) when using only them by themselves.
But when I tried using a combination of different pets it got a bit easier. That's been my experience anyway. I don't claim to know everything about TQ, as it is very diverse with it's Mastery selections.
CD & LK worked out with me & I am comfortable using them, so they are the only bets I use now in combination.
I was going to try wolves with other pets to see how they fared, but I just never got around to it.
I'm hoping GD uses some cool pets. Maybe some zombies or skeletons, or ghosts or demons...or other baddies..?
But I'll be using whatever melee character GD has first. Unless they have pistols & muskets, & then I'll use one of them too.

TQ is full of awesome bosses. It's one of the reasons (of many) that I love it so. I was also pleasantly surprised when I encountered new bosses on the harder difficulty settings. Talos, Manticore, Dragon Liche, Hydra....beyond awesome.

I beat Typhon last night for the first time!! Took me 4 runs. On the last attempt he was at 1% and I had NO potions left. I just shield charged and pooned him. Still got me down to 50% hp tho. Dude is tough. Kind of want to farm him. I was upset with the drops I got. All yellows and some gold? Really? I was expecting something more.
On to Hades.

That is typical loot for Typhon on any difficulty lol, it takes like 10 or 20 tries to find something worthwhile.

That's kind of garbage. I beat the game last night at around 2AM and had to be up at 8:30AM for work. I stepped thru that portal where IT starts. You have no idea how hard it was for me to put the game down and not continue playing. I mean...I had reached IT after 40 hours of TQ. Worst case of blue balls ever.

Fight with Typhon before the patch changed it...
Hmm, Well, his powers were "locked" in the statues.
The way it worked was he only had certain attacks when you started the fight: Flame breath.
IF one of any of his attacks touched any of the statues he would gain some special moves. This was problematic because he would sit and spam flame breath all the time and never make an attempt to touch the statues. You could destroy them to stop him from gaining abilities.
IF He touched one of the statues (can't remember which) he would start spamming meteor instead. Zeus, the lightning bolt, etc. Kind of a nifty idea, but not really workable with the AI he had. I dunno, maybe one of the devs (medierra) could clarify. I think the Hades one gave him leeches, Apollo gave him meteors, Zeus gave him the bolt and um... the last one gave him thorns? Don't remember the last one.
Still, a nice idea. That's what I remember. I don't have my old versions anymore. Like yerk, I've bought the game a number of times. I don't have any of the old ones anymore.
Cheers,

I thought he had all the abilities no matter what, and destroying the statues removed the individual ability?
One took away thorns, another the lightning ball, then flame breath, life steal, mana steal, and of course the meteor.
Maybe it's just been too long I forget all the exact details...
Malpheas
01-29-2010, 04:29 PM
Nah, he had to touch the statues to gain abilities.
On an OFF Topic, saying "Gave him leeches" sounds like an STI. LOL
Renevent
01-29-2010, 04:31 PM
So if you stayed in the middle he couldn't use any of the attacks? I don't remember it that way...but again...could just be my faulty memory.
Malpheas
01-29-2010, 04:39 PM
I think the reason they gave him a conical flame breath attack was that so he could hit the statues accidentally.
Which was a pain in the ass.
But yeah, if you had Colossus form, battle standard, Sapros and Zeno's and a bunch of others you could rush in, get lucky and pummel the shit out of him and MAYBE get away with no abilities. That led to VERY easy farming.
The other big one was ternion. Dead typhon. The -resists staff was great for that. Hecates rod or Fingerbone of Boreas.

I'm new to Titan Quest. I bought it during a recent Steam sale and couldn't put it down. Torchlight light drove me to seek out other similar games, which brought me to TQ. Anyway, I'm at Typhon and I can't beat him with my duel wield warrior. No matter how patient I am, how many pots I have, how much I move around or buff up, I get easily destroyed. I don't think I've ever had him down below 50HP. So I've given up for the time being and on to other games.
I realise this is a bit of an old thread, but TQ:IT is currently what I'm playing so rather than make a new thread about the same thing...
Really enjoying play TQ again. Bought TQ gold off steam because of the exp. I already had TQ (original) so I gave that to the old man :D
Playing a Paladin at the moment and just got to the Hanging gardens. Mobs there are a bit tougher than I was expecting. Greece and Egypt I was just rounding up heaps of mobs and pwning them.. Tried in start of Act 4 and died a few times lol. I like that Act 3 onwards forces you to change your playing style a bit and makes you take notice of resists and exploiting weaknesses.
I'm going to play around with my skills tonight and try making my Pally a bit tougher. I tried farming the Telkine in Egypt but it never dropped anything worthwhile in 10 runs, so i gave up and continued onward!
Also, still on Normal difficulty.
Ok, I'm at Typhon. I've died a few times. I had to ditch my Pally after trying to install Underlords mod and it stuffed al lmy skill points. I un-installed the mod and character was still stuffed.
I've since made a Conquerer and am L32. What is the basic strategy for beating this bastard? He is insane! This is only Normal difficulty too. From what I've read, most people are around my level when they get to him and beat him, but I'm not sure of those people have farmed heaps of good gear before hand with higher toons.
Any tips?

when I beat him I use the Dream mastery and the side skill Storm...
one thing I noticed is if you can manage to run behind him and hit him it does better...but he turns quick
facing him he can drain you very fast...I usually hit the helpers on the towers/statues and then try to beat him up before those run out...it helps to have 2 players....1 to distract and 1 to attack him...
I put all my Dream points in Distortion wave and pile it on him...I dont have to get that close to keep it rolling on him and just keep running...
not sure how other mastery will do
As for farming...to get anything good you need 3-4 players in the game with you....
I never got anything good on single runs but with 3 others in game I get good drops...
even hitting the secret room in Rhodes....
I just wish I knew how to get into teh secret room at the end of the expansion?

K, it's easy. When he has thorns(they are easily visible), don't hit him. When he loses the thorns, watch his posture. If he puts his arms up, keep moving, he's gonna drop meteors on you, so keep moving. Keep moving after the meteors fall cause 1) they roll around and can still hit you, and 2) they can explode and still hurt you. Hit him whenever his hands aren't up and his thorns aren't there. The only thing you gotta watch for now is his mana/life drain, and his lightning bolt. The lightning bolt is easy to dodge too, when he moves, and he doesn't look like he's gonna pimp smack you, run around him and hit him from behind.
i re-skilled last night b4 going to sleep as well. Hopefully it makes it easier.
Thx for the tips guys.

What secret room at the end ? There is no secret room in the palace, just an unaccessible area ;)
I beat that bastard Typhon! Took me 3 goes i think and 100 pots. My conq build was basically just Pulverise, Colosssal, Shield Charge and Battle Standard maxed. All up took about 20 mins i reckon. Hit and run, hit and run.
I beat him having used my last pot! I was shitting myself.. i was thinking "f*ck, don't one shot me now.. pleeeaasseee!

Nice...been like that a few times....
I like Typhon and the Dragon in the cave on Epic and Legendary that can one hit kill you...thats just cool
So, been playing epic mode (first time) since beating Typhon and really enjoying it. Just got to the end of ACT 1, finally lol.
Going to start farming the Telkin in Valley of Kings and also the Scorpion King, purely because he is easy and close to town. I really need some decent armour. I've got 3 epic weapons that I like to switch around and test out. I also have this cool epic amulet so now, I just need some better armour.
One thing that shit me, Epic Manticore boss. That headbite is insta kill. After reading a bit on the forum on how to kill him I tried to run around him alot, and strike when he was casting that cold attack (looks more like lightning to me). Using that tactic, managed to get him to half HP, then got caught by a head bite. Very hard to see when he's gonna do it. Also, those poison knives are a bastard too.
Also converted my toon from Conq to a Harbi, purely because I had picked up 3 epic weapons.. so I thought I'd dual wield. Just changed Defense to Dream, obviously.
It's pretty good! I kill stuff quicker and survivability is not too bad. Still not a lot of attacks though.. I have Phantom strike.. and just took an AoE attack but can't remember the name. So atm, playstyle feels kind of empty. Walk in, drop banner, slash slash, AoE and done. Put in some running away and pot drinking, that's about it.
Just looking forward to getting some epic armour.. hoping the Telkin in ACT1 drops some.

I did a little farming this weekend with a friend...
right now I am set to spawn right at Typhon so thats cool...you get better drops and loot the more people you have...
for my friend I hosted the game and locked it and then added my wife and my kids account and then my friend joined...
I got good drops from Typhon, Scorpion Kind and the Dragon...I also hit the secret room in Rhodes and got some real nice stuff...
a set of boot and real nice resistances and 285 armor and +18% movement...

Was that like Tarwater's Kickers or some such? Or are we talking the Santas boots.
For the person that asked, you had to kill Hades until he dropped a quest item called "The Overlord"; then the passage is north from the east exit to Rhodes and is a locked gate marked with "Locked by Guardian" or some such... With Overlord in inventory, just walk through.
The overlord can drop in any difficulty; the secret sets can drop in epic or above iirc.
I farmed Typhon (normal) Telkin & Scorp King (epic) last night. Didn't really get much. A few blues, only 2 that I could use but I already had purples anyway. Wish you could enchant blues though!
Tried the Pythian run or whatever it's called, from lower war camp to the medusas/gorgons. Didn't get anything and frankly, that run pisses me off. I don't think it's worth it unless your on legendary. Maybe I was unlucky.
Going to finish IT tonight/tomorrow. When I beat Typhon on normal, I wasn't quite strong enough to keep going to Hades so I started EPIC TQ again. Now I'm Level 46 or something, I'll blitz to Hades I think, try get the overlord and do the secret passage.

you get some nice stuff from teh secret room with more players...most I ever had in game was 4...
but I got a kick butt Cestus armor out of there and some red flame boots...
I had a full santa suit and gear...looks cool with a candy shield and cane weapon....
I like doing magical toons with dream skills and I really havent found a great staff...I am still using a green with enchantments that have been better than any Blue or Purple staff I have found...
maybe when some of my other friends get to Legendary I'll make another legendary run with 4-5 people and see what I can find?
whats your favorite Artifact....
so far mine is Murduks Tablet of Destiny....
Don't think I have a favourite yet. I still need to get more to try them out.
Finally got the Overlord off Hades after about 15 runs. I was about to give up and turn the PC off then BAM..
So with that, I quickly blitzed through epic as fast as I could and downed Typhon 1st shot. I was quite shocked actually. I really thought he would one shot me. I had more trouble with the Dragon Lich.
Then with the Overlord in hand, I went to the secret passage in Rhodes. Got some purple ring and some santas gloves. Wooo.
Have started Legendary now and I'm weak as piss with all my resistances back to -60 or something lol.. bah.
Been farming secret passage on Epic and got some loots etc also defeated Hades on Epic and got nothing..
But I'm getting a bit bored of this Harbi. All I do is phantom strike, drop a banner and maybe Distort Reality (free skill from item). It's a pretty shallow class I find. My Pally wasn't much dfferent with just Squal, Charge and bash with the old shield.
Have gotten quite a few good looking caster items, some with bonuses to the dream mastery. Have been wondering which class I could play that'd be more than 1 or 2 attacks as a caster that may include the dream mastery? Doesn't have too, but since I have some items already that complement it...
From what i've read, caster classes are ezy mode and I actually thought playing a melee would be the harder route.. but it's a bit boring if anything. I also don't want to just summon a pet and it kills everything for me either.

Sounds like you are a little burned out. Here are a few suggestions from all the time I spent playing:
My favorite classes were probably my Thane and Sage. For one thing, I really enjoy being able to focus on spell damage without being a caster, and combined with the Wisp pet, Storm really makes this possible. Both did very well.
I also played a Haruspex (spear/shield) for awhile, but he seemed almost too powerful.
For odd builds I had a couple that were fun for awhile. A Diviner specialized in Life Drain and as much -recharge as possible to keep the Outsider up nearly all the time. I could heal to full as long as I didn't get too surrounded. I was more of an upclose caster, which made things dangerous but pretty exciting.
Second odd build would be my Magician. I focused on making my traps do as much fire damage as possible. It is pretty nice to see all that fire. I also used throwing knives quite a bit as I recall. Probably not practical for long term, but it was fun for quite awhile.

I have been going through on TQ only 1.20 patch. I started at retail, but it seemed that enemies turned back too soon and there were a lot of balance changes in 1.20. The enemies still turn back too soon for a ranged player. Larger groups seem to peel off than TQIT.
I am missing the graphic updates that were introduced via TQIT.
There are hitches still but they seem to occur mostly when traversing ground and not so much in the middle of encounters.
The 1.20 patch seems to have a better version of the miles sound system but I havent noticed any particular benefit. The sound might be a little clearer. (Keep a copy of that)
Some sound effects changes are noted. The maenad sounds are more varied than I remember them to be.

Possibly a little burned out. Been playing solidly for a few weeks trying to get to Legendary asap and also farming gear. It also reinforces how important randomly generated dungeons and different scenery are to re-playability. Normal was awesome, Epic was a bit easier but slightly repetitive (saving grace was new bosses) and Legendary so far is.. ehhh again? really? Why am I doing this? lol
Thought It might spice things up with another class. I'll just make it L40 so I can use the gear I have in the vault.

Legendary is where you start getting some good drops....
you dont really get alot in Epic after a few runs unless you have 4 or more players...
solo runs I get nothin....
Yeah I was wondering if Solo was a bit of on weak side for drops.
I've had some success in Secret Passage (epic) with the full Santa's outfit and some Buccaneer stuff.. plus a few legendaries here and there.
I'm going to try and stomach playing the Harbi through Legendary up to Hades.. see how I go. I might change (defiler) the class to something else like a Champion or Slayer and see how they go. I could always load up Lilith or Underlords though for a change.

I still want to know if you can get in the locked room in Hades...its there but why?
I put underlords on last night, finally getting sick of TQ:IT Legendary mode. Bosses are hard but the mobs are pretty easy.
Underlords is cool. Heaps more monsters now and it's pretty tricky for my toon. He isn't all tricked out yet, pretty average really.. so it's a great challenge.
Perfect scenario last night.. walked out of Megara and came across those Avatar looking mobs.. you know, the Na'vi look-a-likes? Anyway, I see three and I kill them. This is the first time playing underlords mind you. I thought "gee, they were tough" lol.
So I walk a little further and I see the beginnings of a group of na'vi. I run in with my Harbi and start pounding. All of a sudden there's like Na'vi bastards everywhere with green glowing spears, casters and archers.. all kicking the shit out of my mercenary...err.. harbinger.
So I run away to safety and try to seperate the melee from the ranged like I usually do. I run into another pack which swarm on me like ants. I run away from them, sinking HP pots which inturn, have a 16sec CD on the now. Doh! Well this went on once more and al it was missing was the Benny Hill music. I dunno how long I ran around for but I eventually beat them all down. No good drops from chests or mobs though. But this was definitely more fun than standard TQ.

On 1.20, typhon is gone with a bow.
Must have lost a relic of demons blood the first time with TQ.
I decided that new engine is better and lockitempickup is needed.
I reinstalled and then patched. Only TQIT has the full engine, ok. I install TQIT. It starts me in Greece.
Actually I wanted to go through the original campaign again. Is the balance off now?
(It seems I normally have 1 completed demons blood relic and one 4/5 -- is it metered out that closely?)
