So, I just checked Crysis 2 on Steam - apparantly, if you preorder, you get exclusive content for multiplayer. So... by preordering the sequel to a very disappointing game, you get an unfair advantage over other players? That just screams greedy... get as many preorders in by offering them unfair advantages, without looking for a moment at the consequences of screwing mp balance. In single player it's fine to pull such stunts, but in multiplayer.. that just seems wrong.
For that reason alone I can't see this game being more than just a mediocre success.

what is the advantage the player gets ?
more health ?
more armor ?
more damage ?
don't you get an advantage in GrimDawn by preordering the legendary edition ?
you automatically get entered into the alpha and beta, so you'll get to explore all the maps and be exposed to all the character's skills before the game is released

That's nowhere near the same thing as :
Hologram Decoy
SCAR weapon attachment
Project a hologram of yourself used to deceive and confuse enemies
SCAR weapon skin – digital
Medium assault rifle
High accuracy and fire rate
Unique digital camouflage variant
Unique Platinum Dog Tag
Displays your rank
Can be viewed by others
Helps identify players
Unique platinum frame not available through any other means
Bonus XP
Awards additional experience
Immediate boost to level 5
Immediate access to all preset classes
Unique skins, I'm very OK with, that should be the basics of a preorder.
Extra XP? Immediately level 5?
A hologram tool that no one else can use besides preorders? (OPPPP WTF)
An assault rifle with high accuracy and rate of fire? Also, quite OP. I can't say cause I haven't played...but, that seems extremely unfair. I don't even care about the weapon and hologram, but starting at a higher level and rewarded with extra XP? pfff
By preordering GD, you have access to the beta and alpha - to help the devs test a game, not to help dominate your competition. Don't even try that argument.

We will get access to an exclusive TBA in-game accessory (http://www.grimdawn.com/contribute_buynow02.php), which will certainly be nice but not give us a significant advantage ... unless you include Bragging rights and Holy reverence, which will make us IMBA. :p
Other than the alpha / beta difference I don't think it will be anything too substantial. We don't really want to pressure people into the Legendary edition. We will probably list people under Legendary or Epic thanks respectively in the credits and the in-game accessory may be different but, again, it won't be a huge difference. It could either be something to give new chars a little boost like a charm type thing that isn't too powerful and which you'd eventually replace at higher level, or just some fun novelty item.

And GD is not a pvp game - Crysis 2 in multiplayer is. Which means you'll get an advantage over other players for no valid reason.
The items you'll be given in Crysis 2 will probably not be better (unless they're really stupid) - but allow the player more choices, giving him the edge. It might be small, but it's there.
Oh well... it comes across as an act of despair to me - the message I'm getting is "this game is gonna suck, let's get as much money out of it before people realize it".
I might be wrong, but, meh, just lost my remaining interest in the game.

As far as I can tell there has been more games giving something extra one way or the other within the last half year or so, strange thing is it looks to me to be the games looking the most promising. My take is that either the publishers are desperate creating some sales or the "inflation of extras" has really started setting in.

I'm not sure. Was the pay-to-win system not popularized in Korean MMORPG markets? A system that gives one player a permanent edge over the other (only in pvp/mp), because someone pays sooner/more than the other, is a no-go for me.
Not that I can imagine the Crysis 2 multiplayer being anything near spectacular..
