View Full Version : Individual Loot

For those of you that don't know the difference - Individual loot is loot that is dropped per player. Each player can not see the other player's loot that has dropped but they can still trade this loot to each other.
To me this looks like a very awesome way to promote cooperative play and let players experience the game without having feelings of regret for the character class they choose (Ranger type class comes to mind.)
Also, individual loot gives you the best of 2 worlds - loot that isn't going to get stolen and players that are more willing to share with each other because the cooperative environment will be very much enhanced. This won't guarantee that players share with each other but it will make a much more fun environment to play with people in.
I feel like Diablo 2 or TQ would have been a much more fun game if it had this. A new up and coming game like GD might benefit greatly from this sort of game-play mechanic.
Yeah, this could be handy. Even though it somehow removes some "cooperative" aspect, where players would give you this nice spear, because you're the only one who can use it. But i've so much greed on any online games.
On the other hand, that makes you remember the few that arent greedy, i suppose.

Yes, they are to implement this system in diablo 3. It's good. But it would be better to have a button "x" that shows only your friend's items on ground, and they cannot be picked up by you. This way you see all first and decide to ask that player for the item or not.

Yup, this is a good idea. I like it. Although, I'm not entirely opposed to having a loot single drop for all players. There's some infantile joy of scrambling for a good item.

I definitely agree with the addition of this filter.

I was thinking the same thing, but adding to that a timer at the end of the name for when your party members can also pick it up. This gives everyone a good chance to pick up items without it being mid-battle but also gives people the chance to pick up loot that doesn't interest one guy, but does interest them.

I know I'm a little late to the discussion, but I was always a fan of this idea. It really makes for a much better multiplayer experience. I don't even think the game needs extra mechanics that were mentioned, like the timers and being able to see the other player's drops (the screen might get a little too crowded for that anyway). It's just a very simple mechanic that keeps the peace and lets you focus on killing monsters.

I don't see a problem with digging out this suggestion. I do like it :D
I have to agree with individual loot. Most of the time I only play with friends in coop, but when I think about diablo 2, you'd always be watching for any potential good drop (especailly uniques) without caring for your teammates at all.
So you want that unique spear I just found and I cant use anyway...? Well fuck you, unless you give me some good item in exchange...!
Personally I think it should be implemented in a way that there is said timer. Basicially, you have 5-15 secs or so to pick up the item (in this duration, your coop partner(s) can see them, but can't pick them up) and if you don't it will be available for anyone to pick up.
So are basically not being put at an disadvantage (5-15 secs should be enough to run to an item.. well there are monster hordes etc, but it is certainly better then having no chance of getting an item if you are playing a ranged char). Another idea is that the items automatically are available for pickup once you can't see them anyway (walk away).
Also, you could make it an option for the host to disable/enable this mechanism. I don't really need it when playing with friends, we always share items, but for public play it seems more viable.

I can't stand the other system (non-individual loot)...in Diablo 2 for instance good stuff was rare enough...so to see something gold drop only to be ninja'd before I even had a chance is so depressing.
In other words, I REALLY hope individual loot is in.

Here's a response by medierra on individual loot;
I was thinking a filter so that each person only saw loot dropped for them and if they didn't bother to pick it up, no one got it. Basically, as someone described, for loot it would be as though you were playing single player.
Anything else seems too involved and cumbersome for a fast paced ARPG. I mean who wants to have menus popping up asking you to vote whether you want an item. I found this to be mildly annoying even in WoW but at least there you have plenty of time to kill between encounters.

Exactly. I don't want to worry about grabbing the item before my timer's up, or about walking off the screen and losing it. Sometimes you need to focus on the battle and you don't need that extra worry. If your partner's a decent person, they'll pick it up and hand it over. If not, you won't know the difference anyway.
I think individual loot is a great system, it promotes playing Coop more then any other way. If this game wants to be a Coop focused game I would say it is necessary, however if it is focused on single player then it shouldn't really matter. It depends where the Devs would like to focus their game towards

No real downside to individual loot, except the removal of that "infantile joy of ninja'ing some loot", which is a good thing really. Infantile thrills attract infants, don't they?
The boss pinata was what made D2 multiplayer such an alienating and bitter place for those who weren't deadened to it.

This may be really handy in multiplayer with random people, I would definitely like that.

Well IF there is individual loot, it would be fine. I remember I was against it in the beginning, but either or it's just another random drop mechanic.
IF there is individual loot, may we have an auto pick-up button then?
Cheers,

I agree, i play Titan Quest with my friends, i feel a little under powered, and when we check out each other's charater's we can see what they have equiped, it turns out all my friends have yellow or blue/green items that are rare, or Armour suits, and i'm thinking ???? well i've been with them the whole time picked up loot with them, yet ??? i have nothing like this ???
And it's because they pick up loot whilst i do all the fighting, they run to the chest in a rush to get the loot before anyone else, as i'm more of a fight first reward after person.
So i like this idea, i think it should be implementated, it stops people taking valuable stuff that you may like, and it stops them picking up ALL LOOT.
they can only see a particular loot, or say 3 peices of loot as you also see your own 3 peices...
it solves so many problems !, my friends if they have something of high value in game's CO-OP GOES RIGHT OUT THE WINDOW.... so i think your idea has more co-op if you ask me.. simple because you both get a fair share regardless.

Well, medierra already stated in another topic ages past that he wanted to implement this, so, this is more of a support group for that decision than anything :)

I think i'd be happier if this were left as a option players could enable or disable when forming a party or making a server.
When my friends and i play, we generally don't scramble for loot generally one look at the names can tell you who an item is going to be more geared for. It's not a perfect system occasionally a blue name is misleading and we'll pick up gear for someone else. But damn the hellgate system was slow.
Hellgate Global(is that what it's called now?) has a system of individual loot, and it takes us sometimes up to 5min after we kill a boss to trade all the loot to one another. Really slows down the gameplay compared to when we play TQ.

You really only share the great loot in HellGate so swapping gear shouldn't take long.
I am a great proponent of individual loot it makes collection easier and keeps the ninja looting out of the game. The system used in Sacred 2 was OK but in a fast paced spread out combat loot tended to get left behind if it was not for you but you could not pick it up until the timer ran out because you were in a rush to kill the next monster.
The Hellgate system was quite effective in the multiplayer game.
