Did you look into the Google checkout (or whatever it is called) system. Used that for Torchlight and was good on the consumer side of things.

Well, the fees are the same. But if they're more friendly, then go for it.

This has no effect on all existing pre-orders.
Thanks, that's a relief to know. Feared for a moment you would have to contact a lot of people trying to sort things out.

Hmm...

Could you possibly set up as a donation rather than pre-order, make sure people give you their email address, and then send the pre-order codes separate from paypal or whoever?

From an accountant's point of view, no, since you'd have to reflect the economic substance of the transaction (ie, as a pre-order) rather than the legal wording (a donation with a "free" game afterwards).

We've looked at Google Checkout but the wording in their Terms of Agreement are similarly vague. We tried to contact Google for clarification but, of course, it is impossible to get anyone on the phone. We're wary of going to Google Checkout until we can get some sort of assurance that we're not going to run into the same issue with them.

We think the most reliable solution is to go through the more legitimate merchant services offered by our bank.

Actually I'm quite happy that you'll not be using paypal. I don't like them very much for various reasons (the preorder issue however not being one of those).

Funny, just today I wanted to support you/order (the epic version will be enough, thanks :) ) and I find out I won't have to use paypal. Yay me :D

If you change to a regular bank transfer system you should also open a bank account in a state of the European Union, UK or Germany for example. Because money transfers from one EU state to another are not very expensive - money transfers from EU to USA are much more expensive!

So, um, a question. . .

I'm in Nova Scotia. The pre-order transaction was not going to be complete until, like, January 28th. . . Is my pre-order still okay, and will I get the key soon? Or am I going to need to pay yet again. . .?

Bit confused by this. . .

Hi Deriaz,

Our account indicates that we received an echeck payment from you but that it will take until the 28th to clear as you mentioned. So long as it clears on the 28th, you should be all set. We will check the account again on the 29th to see if it has cleared and if so we will email out your key. We can also potentially give you a refund if, for some reason, it does not clear and then you can try pre-ordering again once we have the new system set up. It looks like everything should be fine though.

Best,

Arthur

I know its a dumb question, but I don't make much money, so I just never saw the need to open a P-P account (I live from one check to the next).

PayPal is great for small time transactions, but trying to do major business with them is a pain.

Its a good job they didn't close the account for investigation and lock the funds, as happened with a good friend of mine when he was taking donations for a game server he was running.

Reasons like that, I never keep any amount of money in my PayPal account.

There is another developer team, that uses nearly the same business modell as Crate: http://www.interstellarmarines.com/

They also ask the community for financial support and "talk" with the fanbase in their forum about the game and try to integrate ideas from fans into it.

btw: Any news about a working payment system for GD?

I was dismayed that the ordering is down. I work for a software company and we use authorize.net which seems to be a good solution.

As I understand it, they do not charge the % on the dollar amount, but a straight $0.35 for a completed transaction via credit card which isn't too bad and are very easy to get in touch with according to our accounting department.

IL is down and no longer has any employees; the founders of IL still own it (they're not part of Crate) and they may get some sort of royalties if they reach a certain quota of sold units, but it's more likely that that money will end up in the deep pockets of THQ, since they own the game.
So, Crate will not profit and it's somewhat doubtful if Brian Sullivan and Paul Chieffo will see money from it.

Any updates, ETA, or some such, I'd like to start donating, at least a little each month or so, kind of like paying a monthly fee but instead it's helping you guys give us a higher quality game.

And I'd prefer quality over quantity, especially for this genre - Awesome stuff to do > doing the same thing for 10 hours or whatever.

Apparently not. I've found nothing in writing anywhere on their website or in their terms of agreement that explicitly states a for-profit business cannot their services to accept donations. It is perfectly legal for a for-profit to accept donations but they do not seem to allow it. At least, this what we were lead to believe by the representatives we spoke to after they put the limitation on our account. Suffice to say, we won't be using any of their services until possibly after the game is released.

I hope you still work to get a donate button up and going for us, I know it must be super hard, maybe you need some kind of contract because you're for-profit and whom ever is doing the transactions for you needs "security."

I don't know a lick of business though, but I'd like to donate to you guys, so if it ends up that I can't I'll just donate slower by buying the 19.85 option every once in a while, rather then what I had originally intended, which was more frequent.

I can't believe you intend to buy multiple game-keys! That is real ultimate power! I'm sorry that we can't provide a more convenient way for you to make these contributions.

My guess is that merchant service providers are worried about unscrupulous individuals or companies posing as charities and using donation buttons to dupe people out of their money. Requiring them to prove their non-profit tax status is a way to reduce the chances of this occurring.

It is strange that one of our biggest difficulties thus far as a company has been figuring out how to accept money from people who want to pay us. Kind of a strange problem eh? You wouldn't expect that to be an issue but we obviously can't process payments manually ourselves and banks and other merchant services providers are very risk averse when it comes to online buying or intangible items.
