In Titan Quest, you had a choice.

"Are you a boy, or are you a girl?" Is what it was. You chose the burly man or the slender woman. You got to choose what color your tunic was.

The idea was simple: Everyone looks the same until you find uniques. But it feels a bit dated now, and I think simply customization should be offered for the way your character looks. Make them taller or shorter, the color of their hair as well as the tunic, a general 'build' slider, and a bit of choice of what clothing to wear underneath your armor. This would help make you feel connected to your character a little bit more than in Titan Quest.

What's more, if it it would be possible, changing the color of your clothes and generally making them stand out even more would help differentiate between characters. TQ did a lot of that well, I must say, but giving people the choice to play with a hue slider and make your character a little more custom isn't even that hard to make, I reckon, and it could help those people who like to roleplay. Adjusting the color on your fighter's helmet to red while wearing mostly blue clothes might look mighty odd, but that's a bit of charm I think the game could use, even though the title is "Grim Dawn."

Of course, I could be blathering here, and the game already manages to make your character look original already. ;)

Yeah the customization was a disappointment in TQ. I'm actually pretty much fine with couple of things... First of all. Let us modify the head as we want. At least many hairdo's and facial attributes like scars/tattoos. Then, let us hide the helmet on-the-fly if we want. I rather look at my cool head than a potentially ugly helmet.

I actually think giving too much freedom for body attributes might bring quite a much work making all the armors look good on everyone. The inconsistent scalability might become an issue.

Another good thing would be freely dye'able armor pieces. I can't see too much of a hassle making one. If we'd at least get all the major tones and darker and lighter versions of them. They could work well as a drops from mobs and maybe even by crafting.

damn, it. I want scalability for bodies.

Incidentally I think it would be fascinating to run around as a morbidly obese fighter with tattoos (lots of hair). But then certain armours would not fit, they should program that into the game as well.

On a serious note: I think that if you really want to have different default looks and hair with colour and whatnot, knock yourselves out. I know I'll take advantage of it if it's in the game; really, though, I could care less about it.

Although! The dyeing (EDIT for clarity - lol at dying armours) armours is kind of cool. I dig that.

Cheers,

Actually, if you just take the base model and fit everything around that, it should just be a matter of a proper scaling system. By only giving you access to bulk and height, the scaling is pretty much a vertical and/or horizontal stretch, if you think of it in 2d. It shouldn't be too hard to make the armor look good on all sizes and combinations of man and woman.

To dye armors would be very nice. It would be pretty much as my latter idea, but would work a little better. Good idea!

As most darker ARPG games tend to be armor heavy and obscure a lot of the personalisation detail, I don't have problems with this. Since this isn't a big budget game and an MMORPG, I don't need a really big personalisation. Just some simple options would always be great ofcourse.

A lot of extra art was needed for the two genders in TQ.

For me, that would be the last of my worries. If the game sells well enough, they could add it in later as a bonus part of some DLC. But not really of game-breaking importance for me personally. I am more looking forward to the new world and its evils as well as the new skills and gameplay elements. Plus I really hope Crate can get some music for the show as that it much more prevalent during game play that skin tone or hair color.

I understand that you have to pretty much redo a model if you want to do two genders, but the ideas we're giving here are possible in different way: By simply taking existing artwork (the base model and skin) and then adding effects to it. Making a helmet black instead of silver could be much less work than making a second helmet, per example, and stretching a cuirass in length or in width should not be as hard as it may sound if my understanding of this engine is correct. This kind of stuff however isn't as important as basic game mechanics, but it could be relatively easy to make and work out. It would for the roleplayers add a layer of customization that TQ lacked in this area.

But you're right about music being more important. Is this an actual problem? I mean, finding an artist who can create good tunes can't be impossible, can it?
