hey all,
I saw in some screenshots that a character seems to be aiming a gun. This mean guns will be in the full release?? I mean, its just my opinion, but guns dont seem right in a hack'nslash game.... What happened to a nice unsharp axe for smashing your foes? :undecided:
Dont know how others feel about this.. Again, just MY opinion!

You are definitely entitled to your opinion here...this is a very cool community and you will find as long as you present your thoughts in a respectable manner nobody will beat you up for it :p
Anyways, yes there will be guns in the game. The time period is a quasi Victorian age and guns are very relevant. As far as guns not matching with hack and slash game play, I disagree. I think they work fantastic and other games have integrated them very well (Torchlight, for one). On a fundamental level they work not much different than bows and other ranged weapons...really the animations are they only difference.
You will be very happy to know that cutting shit up with swords and other melee weapons are also in the game, so you shouldn't worry!

A gun that fires swords. Now that'd be awesome!

Yeah, a whole new meaning for fire damage, instead of hurting the enemy, it hurts the gun. Time to visit the blacksmith again...

Guns make sense when you consider the world... why wouldn't they have guns? I don't see how it is any less "hack and slash" than a crossbow. Perhaps having artillery would be weird, but guns are just another personal weapon that are meant for killing zombies and demons.

Good question. Personally I'm looking forward to try out some headblowing gunpowder hand cannons.

I'd love to see a giant piece of ancient artillery barraging the enemy positions - or yours! :D
An immovable, impractical giant cannon that takes tons of effort to repair and costs truckloads of resources to use - and although extremely devastating, has very limited usefulness due to its fixed location, zero accuracy and chance to blow up in the users face.

Don't worry, there will be plenty of unsharp axe smashing action! Grim Dawn will indeed have guns though as well. Technologically it fits our time period and, in terms of gameplay, it fits the role of primary weapon for ranged-class character in place of bows. We may have crossbows but only if we can figure out how to design them so that they look good with the existing gun animations. Seems like it should work though.
The time period on Earth that the game most closely relates to, was a time when both guns and melee weapons co-existed on the battlefield. In Cairn, it makes sense for melee weapons to retain considerable value and effectiveness even with the advance of gunpowder weapons due to types of enemies humans are confronted with - namely hordes of zombies and other supernatural foes.
In terms of function, guns are much the same as bows. It is really just a time-period appropriate art change.

Doppelsoldner, landsknecht and tercio, please sir! Well, seeing an immovable walls of pikes would be cool at least... http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c1/Lagos46_kopie.jpg/800px-Lagos46_kopie.jpg

ok thnx for clarification on the subject. I'm just not that much off a gun freak (in games :D). You've succesfully driven away my worries hehe.

I'd assume guns would have a slight knock-back effect. I dunno about you but if i got shot it'd knock me on my arse (not to mention probibly ruin my clothing, my day and quite possibly kill me but thats just detail :p). An arrow I'd assume, would have less force behind it then a bullet. no less lethal but definately less powerful.

Well, since whoever fires the gun is not knocked back on his back, neither will you when you get hit by the bullet (the force of impact is at most the one of firing it, the bullet looses force when 'traveling').
If you do sit down, it is because of being surprised by it, not because of the force of the impact.

Not so sure about that one.
Kinetic energy is the kombination of mass and speed. So the bullet is much faster, but the arrow is much heavier.
But one thing is for sure: the arrow conveys most of its energy onto the target, the bullet just goes through a person - keeping much of it's energy.
So I believe that when it comes to pure physical pushing power, the arrow packs slightly more of a punch than the bullet.

I must say I have always been a fan of melee weapons but gunpowder wpns + magic well I can see the fun, a gun is gritty, and one of the most classic zombie killing weapon out there, imagine blasting off heads dissmembering foes with a nice boomstick!
Im all for guns they can get a really cool design and skill specs to make them bad ass.
A thought, will there be like finishing moves, cus that could really make for some awsome gun action.

Bullets normally just fly right through the body unless they hit a few bones.
Police uses bullets with a plastic-tip to prevent that effect (because it could be dangerous to shoot someone if the bullet could go rampage).
For arrows it depends on the distance. A Longbow that is shot several hundreds meters will knock you over if you are hit since he wont go through you.
Look up the English Longbow for more info. They had the longest range when bows were still used.
