View Full Version : Immediate pick-ups

One thing that slowed the pace in TQ was that you had to wait for items to actually land on the floor before you could see them and pick them up. You would have to wait to see if there was anything useful on the floor after every mobfight. I think it's best to show the items and let them be pick-upable (?) the moment you killed your enemy.
It might seem like a small change, but I think it'll have a very positive aspect on game pacing...

Also, automatic gold pick up when you run over/near it would be nice as well.

I liked how dropped items were effected by physics and would roll down hills/ect, but yeah, maybe the labels should be visible immediately and the ability to pick them up as well.

An area pick up for all items and money would be great, and shared cash for all members of the party. Saved time during loot pickup means more time for killing and loot sorting.

AoE gold pickup is ok, not crazy about it for items though.

Auto-pickup gold is a given, and if possible I remember them saying implementing that.
As for AoE pick-ups; ofcourse I don't mind it being implemented, but I'd only use it if every piece was worth picking up (if it was just for the disassembling). And less would drop than in TQ, ofcourse (or auto-pickup feature for only specific category of items, e.g. greens, yellows, blues, etc..).

True, I guess it's not really something worth asking not to make into the game. Personally, not thrilled about the way it has been in some other games, but I guess done right it would be fine.

This for me is a pretty big concern. Having played many ARPG's there hasn't been a system that worked perfectly. I like the fact that TQ had a filter key to not allow pick ups without holding the ALT key, this stopped picking up usless stuff when you tried to click on a mob, so I hope this is in. I also like the AOE style with filters to sort out the junk items.

I was happy with the way TQ did it. A little realism is always good IMO and I find it disturbing that in some games you can auto-pickup while fighting.
If I was in control, I would just add a green-and-up filter. That would make the TQ system perfect for me. (That and more green-affixes of course, especially for jewelry).

I agree wasn't really fussed with the small delay from waiting for an item to hit the floor. Also, I think I wouldn't really use an AoE item pickup as I very rarely pick up every item in a given area. However, I'm totally in support of an AoE or auto-pickup for gold (or salt and iron in GD I believe)

Well, I simply prefer the option to pick up what I want without auto-pick up anything.
Gold is great to auto-loot but I think that for items it's just not needed, I like to control what goes in my inventory, not have some program tell me what I want, no matter how sophisticated it is, I just don't need it.

It's not needed, no, but having a key to pick up every item within a distance that's above a user-definied quality level is (IMO) useful & helps keep the action flowing a bit longer before you have to sort through your inventory or go to town to sell stuff.

Exactly if it is user defined and depending on loot drop style (by this I mean you only see your own loot in MP style) then having a power vac key for your character is a great idea.

As long as the user can decide not to have the option for a "power vac" then I think I won't have any problems with it. But if it's something forced on the player then that I would find highly annoying.

Area looting aside, one detail I like is when your character doesn't have to be standing directly on top of the item to take it. It just feels clunky when you have to do that tiny jog between items that are 2ft apart, give or take the fact that the ground is shifting around due to the viewpoint following your character.

Yeah, I agree Roros, actually I think the same thing about gold, when playing Torchlight I always thought that the gold could have had a slightly larger area to be picked up, say like 5 feet or more in front of the character or so, I always thought that would have been easier then being right on top of the gold. It would have cut down on all the running back and forth.

Yup, you just don't press the button...
Well, as much as physics were some interesting addition, i dont think it was so necessary on the loot. It was awesome to see armored opponents loose all their stuf, but trying to get this pot of gold rolling down hill was rather annoying. Yes i know, i'm greedy. But its gold people, GOLD!!!
I like the use of physics when they dont get in the way of the gameplay. Monsters dropping to the ground when they die is a very cool idea. But when my templar does his AoE and 20 mobs drop dead at the same time...slideshow. I rather have hordes of monsters that i can kill by the dozen at the same time than some pretty physics, that dont bring that much in the end.
Unless the engine can be improved to have physics not cost much, but that's crazy talk.
