played the demo, looks like a nice reboot of the series, though I do have one question that will determine if I buy it. Does it force you to be linked to Steam to run, like Dawn of War 2 and Metro 2033?

More than likely.

That's a damn shame, only thing that could prevent me from picking up the game at some future point. I happen to like being able to install _my_ games on whatever computer I choose among those I own. Course, if anyone reads the EULA any more then they realize that you're not buying the game, you're purchasing an indefinate lease... but that's a line of thought for the rants section.

It is a Steamworks title, yes.

You can install the game on any computer you own. You just will be able to play one copy at a time (except if you can play it in Steam offline modus, but that's another story).

I enjoyed Civilization IV a good number and Civilization V somehow manages to be a nice improvement. The combat is vastly improved and much easier to decipher for newbies. The hexagon grid is an awesome improvement and leads to more "natural" looking borders. The actual need for a quantity of resources, not just a single unit, is a very good change and makes resource wars/trading all the more useful. Also, I love the city state mechanics, it adds a lot of funny diplomacy. I like the additions, but I miss some of the removals (religion, for one). I'd say it is a good evolution, but it certainly isn't revolutionary. But who needs revolution when the core game play was so solid anyway?

In addition to what yerkyerk wrote, just about every single game you have ever purchased is the same according to their respective EULA's. You really don't own any game/software, merely a license to use it. Games using certain DRM simply have ways of enforcing that agreement.
It's all imaginary man...don't sweat the small stuff. Irrational fears and worries are keeping you from enjoying the better things in life...like a new video game!

Yeah, it's all imaginary, but I spend real money on it. So it's something I rant about when I'm sitting pretty otherwise. I'll stick with Civ 4 in this case, as I can play a LAN game with my wife without spending $100 for two copies. Especially when there are other games coming out that have my attention. And yes, I realize in this regard I'm being old-fashioned for a gamer ;)

Beautifully said. For that matter, the food I'm going to eat for dinner, that I paid for, is also going to only last for a limited time. Some day these services could shut down and I'll lose access to my games. If so, I'd simply repurchase or locate the ones I'd ever plan to play again (very few likely). Key word being could. I know for a fact my dinner will be eaten and gone, my money literally flushed down the toilet. It's all relative.

I would wait with Civ V for a bit. The AI is in fairly bad shape, it just doesn't seem to have any idea how to field, and adequately move its units around to make the most of a combined arms approach (ie: archers at the back, melee units to the front for example). There are some nice things in Civ V of course, and the last game I played, I did enjoy. But I'm in no hurry to get back in, especially considering the game went for 3 hours, very quick considering the wait during turn times also. Diplomacy is a side element of the game which I frequently ignored. I don't even care if the AI hates me right now, if they declare, then I can push them back because their army is laughable.

Its the exact same thing when you go to the store and buy the game disc. They are not selling you a game, they are selling you a license to use it. The only difference is that retail you have to insert a disc to install and with Steam you need an internet connection to install. Everything else is the same.
Couple that with most games having some form of online verification now and the fear that a company could revoke your license on a whim is no different for Steam or retail, its just that with Retail you have the comfort blanket of a physical disc... something you can also get from Steam by using Steams "Create a backup" feature after you have downloaded your game.

You can install it on every single one of them.... You do need to register it with your Steam account though.

My brothers gave it to my as a birthday-present to-come, and besides the fact that my newest laptop (read CIV-V capable) is getting repaired, I'm pretty much awaiting the newest installment.
I've played every CIV there is except beyond the sword (recommendations anyone?) and I'm hoping to embark on a new chapter with V. But obviously I'll have to wait for my laptop and some decent patches...

Beyond the Sword brought some interesting new content in the form of mods for the engine Civ 4 was built on, in some cases they'd be a total rebuild. If you liked Civ 4 and want something to tide you over until you can install and play 5... see if you can lay hands on it cheap, or play something else if you can't.
So is anyone actually playing Civ 5 or are we concentrating on the price/licensing? I read a lot of people are disgusted with the Australian price for one. We have to pay $30 more than other countries through steam.
Is it a good game? Is it worth upgrading from Civ 4?

I'm playing it:D
I installed it Friday morning and have thus far played 45 hours in two different campaigns over three days.
My first real attempt at playing a Civ game and, I must say, I am enjoying it.
I got my copy, in the UK, from Game on pre-order and paid just £14.99 for it:rolleyes:
I'm off to bed now before the wife realizes that I have been up ALL night AGAIN.........

Yeah, the Australian price is shit, but a good tax return meant I decided to go all the way and get the Collector's Edition. The game isn't bad, but I'd say wait a bit if you are unsure about diving in with it. Combat and city states are awesome, AI diplomacy with the other major powers, their general intellect, and a few other new features of the game, not so awesome. I would say it is less impressive than Civ IV at release, but still miles ahead of Civ III.

I bought the Digital Deluxe Edition of Civ 5 for myself and my wife and a good 5 of my friends bought it and it seems at a minimum, five of their friends bought it and so on.
It continues to be the number one best selling title on Steam for a good reason.
As a fan of Civ for 19 years I am very happy with Civ5, I think it makes some great changes to gameplay to reinvent the series that allows Civ5 to stand apart from Civ 1-4 while maintaining all of the core elements that make a Civ game a Civ game.

Civ 5 is fantastic, the only real complaint for me is the quotes they used for tech & wonders, and most importantly the future tech quote, it's not funny in the least to dignify that idiot in a legendary game like civ 5. It was funny when they did it to Napoleon because he was a fantastic leader.
Anyway thank goodness this is the only problem I have with the game.

It costs 45€ in Germany. How did you get it for that price? Maybe mixed up the numbers and it was 41,99?

I got £10 off for pre-ordering it and another £10 on my Game reward card:D
Still enjoying it, too.

I so wanted to wait for a bit of a price drop but oh well.
Safe to say, my day just evaporated in front of this game. There are a lot of good changes. I especially like the projectile battles and the added interest in becoming sea-worthy. In addition, the things you can buy with culture points are very cool. Playing France right now just to exploit that and it seems to be going well.
Anyway, got love being able to buy games without even leaving the house.

Sid Meier giving DLC for free (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/10/26/khaaan-civilization-v-dlc-released/)? That's what I love to hear when dev give something back to gamers.
