View Full Version : Skeleton Genocide

Straight to the point, skeletons are an easy and great way to portray the presence of an undead faction. I speak for a lot of my friends and I speculate for a ranged audience that the use of some creature models have been...overused?
Sure with Titan Quest skeletons were used with the story but after awhile, they really lost their "freshness". After playing Diablo 1&2, TQ:IT, MU, Elders Scrolls: Oblivion, WoW...I personally have become desensitized to the skeleton horde.
Again I understand that skeletons are a great way to convey undead control but please, something new.

We're switching it up this time around with: Jellotons! They're like skeletons but instead of hard and brittle, they're squishy and delicious!
Actually, that's a lie. We will have neither skeletons nor, sadly, jellotons...

aww, no skeletons? I guess zombies are well enough, I generally like to see a high variety of enemies, if possible, or at least variations within a specific enemy.

No skeletons? Boo!
At any rate, overused they may be, but i don't think it's down to the model. My logic just can't handle how fragile they are. The black magic required to raise the dead can't be weak, and when i faced my first skeleton in Gothic 2, i was in awe. Now THERE was a proper sack of bones!
The lesser version could be defeated after a while of practice, but a Skeleton Warrior tanned my hide in an instant. In that game skeletons were something entirely different and something to be feared.
And of course they screwed it all up by making skeletons the little sissies they are in Gothic 3...

Man, I want to see something else rather than skeletons and zombies.
Please give me possessions of all shapes and sizes; otherworldly spirits come dreadnaughting through this fragile world.
Metaphor, allegory and what-not.

Didn't we have a thread on this at the TQ.net forums, on what enemies we'd like to see make it into the game?
At least no one asking for mountain lions to be added into the game. Since they are one of the natural predators of the Llama, I don't know if we'd see you around much anymore after that. I'd hate see you get eaten.
Edit: I'm now a Petitioner! w00t!1!!

Yeah, most of the suggestions were of things that were cliche.
Except CTHULU. That would be epic.

Agreed on Cthulu, but I'd still like to see a Jabberwocky make it into the game. One that can only be killed by using a Vorpal Blade that goes "snicker-snack"; and with its head, I can go galumphing back to the quest giver.

Skeletons were definetely overused in TQ, they appeared in every act.. they did look cool though, and with the absence of proper death effects for TQ, seeing the skeletons bones fall apart was quite rewarding.
I know I wouldn't mind a graveyard area where you could go for some good ol' bone juggling http://cache.hyves-static.net/images/smilies/default/smiley_juggling.gif
Just limited to that area. Or skeletons as pets, ofcourse :) That brings back some good memories...

It was totally fun when you used a powerful strike in TQ to drop the skeletons and their bones flew at every direction at huge speed. Well, since we can't get that feeling now, it's a shame. BUT we have the gibbing incoming, so it's all good, if not even better!

All this talk of skeletons just makes me think of how many dead folks there must be in the worlds of TQ and Diablo. Hordes of fully animated skeletons, with both arms and legs, which after time should really be a rare sight (not to mention people being cremated and therefore having no skeleton to animate).
I did have a good idea for a skeleton-related boss monster.
First, take a look at this... [Wiki link] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ossuary)
Imagine a mega-skeleton made up of all those bones...
Shame there won't be skeletons now really...

..Panthro, you could do the same thing with fleshy parts too. Ever seen a flesh golem? (not in person obviously lol) How about one of them abominations from WC3? Several corpses stitched together to make one hulking zombie beast.

THIS seems more plausible then an bone golem. For several reasons actually, my favorite one being this is an experiment that was popular back in those days..(in story anyway.) Frankenstein?

That's a giant tumor on legs. Though it might look terrifying, the fact that it is a tumor will actually make it less harmful...

You know there has to be skeletons, if you have a explosive wielding PC there is nothing better than having a pile of bone shards flying in every direction.

Yes, skeletons are totally overused, but without them what would be as satisfying as killing Eurynomi. Perhaps those flesh golems could turn into a bazillion explodifying giblets upon death? Carnage!

What is the most frail monster then instead of skellies?
yerkyerk
05-11-2010, 09:04 AM
I think the Automatoi? If you can call that fragile... they did break apart on death and it was satisfying to 'kill' them because of that :)
alexei
05-11-2010, 09:57 AM
:) It just that skeletons looks thin, only bones, look really fragile and break totally apart on strong kill, all bones scattered everywhere. Yeah satisfying to kill bunch and bunch of them. Especially with skill that can kill many in one shot. Elaborated it a bit. Automatoi have that tough look even though it is rather fragile.

We definitely need some skellies. My favourites were in TQ. Maybe a skeleton pet would be good too!
please implement some of them. :)
Maybe half-rotten flesh+broken bones half skelli/zombie ones.
without legs/arms/head variation, etc.
Boosted skelli appearance.
Skeletons is a "must have" feature in every great arpg!

Well, medierra already said that there would be no skellies. If there is reason for that (like lore), then I have no problem at all. Not that I would be downed if I can meet any skelli.

I want skeletons in the game too.
In graveyards would be nice.
I personally do not think that they are "over-used" at all.
But I am all for throwing in a lot of variations to spicen things up. Say for example you have your regular skeletons, but then throw in some demonic looking skeletons with horns & skeleton wings... skeletons missing heads, arms, etc... skeletons with bionic enhancements (the medieval kind)... skeletons with weird bone marrow sucking parasites on them...and I could go on .
But please add skeles. They are not over-used, just not mixed up well enough, or not enough variety is all.
They are also misunderstood social misfits, and we should pity them.
;)

Basically every creature type in every game is 'overused' at this point. An easy way to create variety is by including a lot of subtypes/different types of the same enemy. This can further be diversified by changing model colors (and now scaling! yay!) or maybe glueing a few extra polygons/some armor/barding onto them. Just take a look at WoW...a skeleton can be a wimpy little bugger you grind at level 1 or a skyscraper sized axe wielding thing that takes 25 people to kill.
Lets take the skeleton example. So, lets assume 3 models made (regular skeleton, caster skeleton, massive multiheaded centaur demon thing skeleton). 3 models per 'race' seems quite reasonable.
Off the top of my head you could have:
- Normal skeleton melee types, tons of variety with different armor models/weapons.
- Skeletal generals (normal model, bigger and stonger, aura that buffs nearby skeletons)
- Skeletal archers/gunmen/throwers (normal model with ranged weapons).
- Skeletal Titans (normal model - really really big, with tons of the smaller types running around it to provide scale)
- Skeletal Raisers (caster model, raises normal skeletons/ressurects)
- Bone Healers (caster model, heals/buffs skeletons nearby)
- Skeleton Mages (loads of potential variety)
- Liches (bigger, more powerful mages)
- Skeleton Demon thing could be used as an act boss/miniboss, with a smaller scale version being a semi-rare spawn in normal skeleton mobs.
I could think of more if I try.

Whilst skeletons should have variety in the regard of having multiple types, like fodder, warriors, generals, liches,.... They shouldn't have the separate sub-races they had in TQ(Awakened, Gilded, Defiled,....), nor, for that matter, should any enemy have sub-race.A skeleton fodder minion should be just that, whether you met him in a little village graveyard when you went to deliver some candles for the church, at lvl1 or in a massive Necropolis you are attacking at lvl1000

How about a bunch or a dozens of Veery weak skeletons that come out from a grave?
I guess they're good to crush and crumple, you will only need to hit them once or twice to kill' em.
