View Full Version : Forum Name Explanations
Coridan

Let's have 'em! I'm really curious why people chose the forum names they chose. Why medierra? Why Rhis? Subshape? Void? Everyone?
I'll start with mine:
I've used this name ever since WoW. It's Greek for "Ready to fight." It was my warrior's name on that game and it felt fitting. It also appears to be a name people have a hard time spelling right. You won't believe how often I get Cordian.
Renevent
07-30-2010, 07:40 PM
I first used Renevent in Asheron's Call 2...don't really know why but it sounded mean and awesome. Actually, I used to go by Revenant which means the undead or something, but in another game it was already taken so I used Renevent instead.
I also go by KnuckleHead which is just a term from the military I always thought was comical.
Damn privates...nothing but a bunch of knuckle heads!
:p

Heh, I always wondered why you had the name knucklehead on steam.
Malpheas
07-30-2010, 07:52 PM
Hmm, originally I thought it meant "Mischief maker". Basically I took, in bastardized form, from Malfeasance. Rigging a contest, or intentionally loosing for some benefit, etc. In some games it's used as a name for hell.
I kept getting confused with Morpheus when the Matrix came out.
I've been using it since I started playing Diablo 1. Ah poor sorcerer malpheas, died in hell difficulty when an inventory full of mana potions couldn't save you.
Void(null)
07-30-2010, 08:00 PM
Void(null) or Void(0) is a Javascript call that stops a program from enacting its normal behavior, it can be used by a programmer in creative ways but it can also be an accidental side effect when you break something. Kind of like Return 0 in C++.
I started using it in a series of ambiguous usernames.
For example:
City of Heroes @Globally Hidden
GFWL: User Account
Forums: Void(null)
As an interesting side effect, on occasion Void(null) will break a forums registration system and I will be left with a user account that is functional for lurking but isn't correctly in the system so I cant post, but the account also cant be deleted via script and has to be disabled manually.
ZZSmufa
07-30-2010, 08:07 PM
It sounded awesome to my 12-year old self and was easy to shorten to ZZS in arcades. Originally the name was longer, but I'm loathe to actually write it anywhere anymore in its original form. It's retarded enough as it is. However, as I'm yet to encounter anyone else using the same nick and have used it for so long, it'll just have to do.
ASYLUM101
07-30-2010, 08:23 PM
Well.. there's not much to say besides my old, 12-year old self had the alias of "Spoon", which wasn't very intimidating, so I changed it up a bit to fit my personality when I was 15. Now, it doesn't fit my personality but I still like the name. Short, to the point, has a bit of meaning to it, and is a bit creepy. (not the word itself, but the place)
Panthro
07-30-2010, 08:31 PM
I've had a few names over the years.
This current one is based around a nickname I had once (Panthro, after the thundercat), had to rely on nicknames because there are too many Andys in the world.
No one calls me Panthro very much these days though, but I kept it for certain parts of the internet.
I have other names I use for game characters, although I tend to reserve them for offline use only.
At one point I went by the name ICI Bill (on Ultima Online, amongst other places). I tend not to use that name these days. It was based on a chemical factory for not much reason really.
@ZZSmufa: I tended to use IDG in arcades, or IDGAS if it gave me the room. It was short for "I don't give a shit", which seemed clever to a younger me.
Kluga
07-30-2010, 11:58 PM
Kluga is my last name...lol. Its very uncommon so its often not taken as a login or username on various websites by the time I get to them. It just sounds weird and its a word people haven't really heard before. The only exception to this would be on steam where I've recently changed my gamertag to "Icarus". I'm very interested in Greek mythology and his story is quite cool.
zidders
07-31-2010, 12:17 AM
Basically, 'Zidders' came from me using 'Zidaya' as my name in Second Life, 'Zidaya' came from a guild I was in in Everquest for a few years, and it was originally my way of paying tribute to all the fun times. Eventually, 'Zid' or 'Zidders', as my friends in the SL furry community called me, became my nickname irl.
ZiddersRooFurry is my steam name.
'Zidaya' itself came from...I think...some Tad Williams novels. I think it means 'Children of' or child of 'light', in the language the elves in his books spoke.
Kardiophylax
07-31-2010, 03:20 AM
My forum name is stolen from ancient history. Kardiophylax is described as being the body armor worn by certain Greek warriors, or in other cases as a large metal disc which protected the chest/heart area from attack. In any case, I wanted something unique and it fit for most of the forums I needed it for at the time (Titan Quest, Spartan, and other ancient combat games). Prior to that I didn't really have a regular handle, I kind of fluctuated from name to name for a bit.
TECHNOmancer
07-31-2010, 04:00 AM
Mine should be fairly obvious. If it's not, I am a 'lover of techno' -- techno-mancer -- as opposed to a 'lover of technology'.
I have also used Dire 51, which is the name of the end boss in M.U.S.H.A., my second-most favorite shooter for the Genesis (Thunderforce III is my favorite).
TECHNOmancer

It is a town in Poland, quite fun to say and even more beautiful to visit (I hear)...
eisprinzessin

The Germans here might remember this silly and hilarious TV-ad "Let's compare Media Markt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Markt) to an ice hockey team." (WTF!) from about 15 years ago. At the end a guy was ruffed up by one of the players, after he called him Eisprinzessin (http://www.grimdawn.com/forums/showthread.php?t=271&highlight=ice+princess).
One night my friends and I played Mario Kart 64 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_Kart_64) and I picked Princess Peach (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_Peach). A friend of mine wondered: "WTF, who has picked Peach? You!?! Er, Eisprinzessin, or what?". I usually suck a sport games, but I ended up winning against my 3 friends. Since then I've been using it as good luck charm.
Prosoro
07-31-2010, 10:20 AM
Haha interesting to hear where/how peoples names originate. Mine comes from a book I'm (slowly) writing, Prosoro is name of the main Character.
My other most used name, usually for FPS games is Shadowcrow :D
Perturabo
07-31-2010, 04:52 PM
Perturabo is taken from the warhammer 40k universe. He is the daemon primarch of the Iron Warriors Chaos Space Marine Legion, which I am playing (some 5k points ready for battle). I did some research several years ago and think that the name stands for dark, brooding & sinister - which would be fitting since these are characteristics of Perturabo.
I started onlinegames with the nick "shadow" but soon found out that it was a very often used name. Back then I had just started building up my IW and I really loved them so I decided to pick "Perturabo". It's not a really common name in most onlinegames and boards which is why I never changed it.
Alternative is nowadays "Kalesh Barabass", a character from my Vampire - The Dark Ages group, some kind of uber-vampire and ever-returning end boss. Sometimes I use other names but these are RP-only-chars.
myrmidon

my name comes from Greek to. it meens the warriors of Achilles and i got it from those fish people in titan quest. i used to use meo i don't know why and i use the coyl sometimes (captain of your life).
Nephlyte
08-02-2010, 03:57 AM
I was getting ready for work one day and the kids were watching a TV show called Sailor Moon, i didnt think much of it at first then i seen a Villein named Nephlyte and i thought as soon as i heard it " That sounds like a good gaming Alias " so i been running with that ever since.
My first gaming Alias was Raign. I got that off one of my favourite games called Dark Reign 2. I still play that game today!
My name has been shortened from my first ever gaming name back in the days of when I played Battlefield 1942 and DC in ladder competitions.
I started with Silencer and had that for years but then it was shortened to Sil or Sile by mates in my clan.
Then one day I couldn't register Sile on a forum, and I had just been reading a book (in the GOR series) in which a monster was called the "Kurii". so I took Silen from Silencer, and added Kurii on the end becoming Silenkurri. Thats my steam name and I generally use it for other logins for stuff.
So yeah, good old Sile has been with my since I was around 15. I'm 28 next month!

I think mine is rather straightforward.
GREEN IS BEST

Awesome, keep them coming. Even if your alias is obvious, maybe you could explain why you chose it.
Also, I've still yet to see any crate employees post here. Until I hear otherwise, I'll assume that "Rhis" stands for an elephant's behind.
Roros
08-03-2010, 02:01 PM
I first used 'scrap' since that's what my first computer was. At lans and stuff there was just this natural progression from "can your piece of scrap even run this game?" to "can scrap run this game?".
It wasn't really internet friendly since it's so generic, so I went with Roros which was sufficiently random and nontaken. It's from where I was born which is Røros.

True, but it needs moar dakka!

You're just saying that because he turned you into a turtle. :p
Jenga

Jenga is the best game ever (sorry Crate :P) therefore it's my name.
corwiniii
08-04-2010, 07:48 PM
I have used Corwin and its variants since about 1994. It's the main character from my favorite book series The Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny. The iii or III is because Corwin is usually taken anywhere I register so I just tack on III to be sure it'll work. So far it always has.
Also, for those of you who may remember using AOL for actual internet access, there was a program called AOHELL (c. 1994) that facilitated in the creation of accounts that were not always...ahem...legit. So I burned up a lot of Corwin accounts as they were closed down. I just tacked on the next Roman numeral and I was back in business on my 2,400 baud modem.
Juiceman
08-05-2010, 01:18 AM
My brother and his friends just kept calling me Juiceman one day, and so it just stuck.
My real alias was Gastricpenguin, but I have good reason not to use it anymore ._.
yerkyerk
08-05-2010, 10:53 AM
Some interesting nicks there. And lol @ void's nick crashing forums :D
Mine came from when I first started using the internet. Me and my brother fought it was cool to rile up everyone in chatboxes (I guess that would be trolling - although that word came into popularity many years later), so we choose jackass names accordingly. My brother misspelled jerk into yerk and we had great fun trolling some chatbox with that name. So I logged in more often with that name. I became aware that I needed a spam adress/name so I started registering as yerk across the web - yerk was often too short or already taken, so I changed it into the uglier yerkyerk - which is almost never taken. I registered everywhere with that name, and some of the boards I started posting under that name. The name grew on me, so I hang on to it.
I also started using Yerk Krey (where I turned the second yerk backwards, making it a palindrome), which sounds cool to me. But spaces can't often be registered and I already used the name yerkyerk so much it's just easier to hold on to it.
Thander
08-05-2010, 02:01 PM
Well, Thander is the surname of all my major DDO characters, my most famous being Edwark Thander.
Ed is short and simple to greet, WAARK is my addiction to the barbaric side of dwarves, and Thander is my combination of Thane and Thunder.
Harlequin
04-30-2011, 04:22 PM
Hm I missed that one, thanks Eisprinzessin for linking it. :)
My name doesn't come from the Harlequin-Syndrome and it doesn't come from Warhammer's Eldar Tribe either.
IT comes from the German Harlekin, it's basically a clown. I had to come up with a name when I started to play games online and I liked the sound of it.
Sadly it is taken quite often so I had to come up with several new nicks. >_<
I guess I will stick to Beryll now (as in LoL-EU). It's short and easy to spell.
Again I liked the sound of it. It's German for Beryl but aside from that it has no real intended meaning behind it.
hooby
04-30-2011, 05:52 PM
Well, when I was twelve or thirteen it was common to make up nicknames by shortening peoples last names (or parts of the last name) - at least at my school.
So the nick I got was pronounced like "hooby", but not written that way.
I hated it, but was not able to get rid of it, so the best thing I could do was to invent some English writing for it, to make it look a bit more cool at least.
That's how the nickname "hooby" was invented, and over the years I grew to like it. It seemed only natural to use it on the internet too.
It's rarely taken and has no obvious meaning to it, which imho is perfect for an internet nick ;)
Rainier Wolfcastle

Lol i hope i don't have to spell mine out!
(for those living under a rock for the last 20 some odd years its a simpsons char.)
frogemoth
06-10-2011, 01:14 PM
Mine is coming from D&D, frogemoth is a swamp monster with a lot of tentacles. I know it is spelled wrong but I always write it that way so I keep using it like that.

Code187
06-10-2011, 03:29 PM
i love MDK murder death kill, so usa police radio for murder is Code187:D
there it is! reason for my gaming name.
my RL nick is Moxica what i also use online. Moxica was a spanish dude back in 1492 that slaughtered alot indians tribes for gold. and i was a bully when i was a teen, so there fore Moxica :D MUWAHAHAHAhahahahaha............

My name is i.n.s.a.n.e, that's what I am. Easy as that. =)
Overlord
06-11-2011, 03:04 PM
Was playing Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, and in act V there was a type of demon called "Overlord". I liked it and took it, not knowing what it really stands for. Later I found out what an Overlord is, and loved it even more.
It has a nice ring for evil characters, and since I'm evil on the internet it's perfect ;). I also use it with "666" at the end.
Jenga
06-12-2011, 01:09 AM
I named one of my first TQ characters Jenga so it stuck for the TQ/GD forums.
Normally my online alias would be either blooM or blooMski

The Old Farmer
06-12-2011, 05:50 PM
I was not in to forums for many years so I just registered with my first name (Terry) but its not as cool sounding as The Old Farmer and since that is my occupation as well as a personal description and not real common on the internet I have been using it as my nick.
Spinfx

I like to mess around with editing tools so thats why FX.
Knuckles
06-15-2011, 12:45 AM
Mine was by accident. The first time I went and played MP in a game I thought I was naming my character (wanted a dual knuckle gladiator). Realized too late I had actually named my account that.
By the time I got around to possibly changing it, everyone knew me by Knuckles so I ended keeping the name.
Jenga
06-15-2011, 11:51 PM
Your story was different last August ... not that the above contradicts your previous post ... just wondering :p
Well Jenga is the best game ever :) and that's why I named my first Corsair Jenga.
And it stuck for TQ, TQ.net and the GD forums!
EDIT - Holy shit fucking crap this is the same thread :O
Executioneer
06-16-2011, 12:20 PM
mine is pretty simple. in my previous years i had many nicks but friends always liked my playstyle of conquering everything, then move on. thus i named my first conquerer in TQ since the name reflected attitude.

Druthers
06-17-2011, 04:37 PM
My handle is an old fashion word that no one really knows any more, it can be used in place of 'rather' or 'prefer.' There is also a funny song from the 50s called: If I Had My Druthers.
If I had my druthers,
I'd druther have my druthers
Than anything else I know.
While you'd druther hustle
accumulatin' muscle
I'd druther watch daisies grow.
I like the way the word sounds coming off the tongue, its just fun.
